Women's rugby tops Washington College The AU women's rugby club soundly defeated Washington College, 63-5, on Saturday to avenge a defeat from two seasons ago. The Eagles sprinted out to a 25-0 lead in the first half off five tries before continuing their dominance in the second stanza for seven more tries and a conversion kick.

As clear as black and white

There are now only two. That was my first thought when the Boston Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years. Now there are only two teams that have not won a World Series in a pathetically long time. And they're both from Chicago. The Chicago Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908 and the Chicago White Sox haven't won since 1917.

Volleyball sweeps Pa. rivals

The AU women's volleyball team continued its dominance of the Patriot League by defeating Lehigh Friday night, 3-0 (30-14, 30-28, and 30-16), and Lafayette Saturday, 3-1 (30-25, 30-16, 27-30, and 30-20), at Bender Arena. The Eagles (11-7, 5-0 PL) remain unbeaten in PL play this season and have now won 69-straight PL matches.

AU spears Tribe for 10th-straight win

October 3

Having rarely been challenged so far this season, the AU field hockey team was prepared for a test Sunday, in the form of No. 24 William and Mary (6-5). The Eagles scored an "A," thrashing the Tribe, 6-1, at the William I. Jacobs Recreation Center. The win was AU's 10th in what, so far, has been a perfect season.

Women's soccer gets a huge win in PL opener

For the AU women's soccer team, the non-conference schedule was brutal. It had been shut out three times and lost two matches in overtime. The Eagles had been on the friendly side of a final score just three times. But Friday at Reeves Field, their luck may have turned, and it could not have been at a better time.

XC men, women win George Mason invite The AU men's and women's cross country teams swept first-place honors at the George Mason Invitational Saturday. AU sophomore Steve Hallinan took the men's individual title in 24:43, his career-best 8,000 meter time. Junior Brendan Fennell took second in 25:12, and freshman Kevin Tschirhart took fourth.

Losing the love of the game - in cyberspace

The Internet is changing the behavioral protocall for all die-hard sports fans with a modem. Angry phone calls on sports talk radio are being replaced by angry rants on online message boards. In-person stalking is leaving in favor of Facebook stalking March Madness greats, New Years Day heroes, and former AU tennis star Tushar Garg.

Volleyball overcomes hitting woes to win third PL contest The AU women's volleyball team overcame a hard-hitting Navy team and a rare game loss to overtake the Midshipmen in Annapolis Tuesday, 3-1 (30-22, 29-31, 30-23, 30-25). The Eagles (9-7. 3-0 Patriot League) lost the hitting battle, 64-58, for the first time this season.

Danger abounds on our home turf

With Ladnergate, September 2005 will not be remembered as AU's brightest historical moment. But, I'm getting sick and tired of hearing people complain about money misspent for things that don't affect the school. So, as a frustrated flag football player and president of Delta Tau Delta, I'm going to complain about the thousands of dollars AU did spend for a "good reason.

O, it's a shame what's up in Baltimore

Last Friday night, I took the train up to Baltimore to see my beloved Red Sox take on the Baltimore Orioles. The announced attendance that night was 46,000. Of those 46,000, probably all but 27 were Red Sox fans. How could a team with a successful history, wonderful stadium and decent ticket prices not draw well? What happened to a team that once set records for attendance and sold out every game? I think there are a number of reasons.

On the surface, AU teams are divided

In 1965, baseball's Houston Astros got a quick horticultural lesson: Grass grows best outside. After their first season in the Astrodome, their natural-grass field withered away. So they replaced it with the growing technology of synthetic turf, and thus began turf wars, which have divided athletes, fans and sports medicine experts.

Working OT can't solve women's soccer's problems

If AU's women's soccer team had one weakness Monday, it was set-play defense. Against Towson, that problem came to agonizing light. Towson scored two goals, one off a corner kick and one off a free kick, to beat AU in overtime, 2-1, at Reeves Field. Towson scored the game-winner off an Alison Reinhart free kick that got through the box and AU's 'keeper in the 106th minute.

Field hockey, volleyball dominant during weekend: Front-line power propells weekend sweep

In the past, the situation was fairly routine for the AU volleyball team. An Eagle setter would pop a pass along the net to the outside hitter, who would elevate and ready for the kill. But a split second later the attack would be repelled by the veritable wall of arms and hands on the other side of the net, rejecting the ball to the floor.

Field hockey, volleyball dominant during weekend: Raised intensity sparks easy Eagle victory

Off to its best start in program history, the AU field hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to eight games after a dominating 6-1 win over Longwood Sunday at Jacobs Field. The No. 4 Eagles (8-0), behind the three-goal effort of sophomore attacker Maggie Hall, wasted no time getting on the board as Hall took advantage of a breakaway in the eighth minute.
