Men's b-ball still in search of win

BALTIMORE - For the fourth straight game, a win eluded the AU men's basketball team Tuesday, as the Eagles failed to overcome a 20-point halftime deficit at Loyola (Md.) to fall, 68-60. Junior guard Linas Lekavicius led AU (0-4) with a season high 14 points, and freshman Derrick Mercer added 12.

A week from tomorrow is the 28th anniversary of AU's most famous sports moment. No, it's not the 20th anniversary of our men's soccer team's loss in the NCAA championship game to UCLA in eight overtimes. And no, not the anniversary of one of the volleyball team's myriad of championships.

Jennings, West keys to success

As AU embarks on another winter season it's time to close the book on field hockey and men's soccer. Both programs accomplished feats that would be difficult at most smaller schools in weaker conferences. And the brains behind the success belong to coaches Steve Jennings and Todd West - two coaches dedicated to a competitive tradition with or without the competitive budget.

Women's b-ball stumbles early

The AU women's basketball team dropped its first two games of the season this weekend, falling soundly at Towson Friday and at home to Delaware Sunday. The Eagles opened their season Friday, suffering a 67-54 loss to the Tigers. Hadavi led the Eagles with a career-high 22 points, and Lipskis scored 10 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.

Sports brief: Men's basketball scares Huskies, but drops opener, 99-82

After scaring defending Pac-10 champion Washington with a tied score at halftime, AU fell to the Huskies, 99-82, Saturday in Seattle. The Eagles (0-1) led by as many as four points in the first half and went up, 44-41, on an Andre Ingram 3-pointer to start the second.

Sports brief: Swimmers take solo and relay honors at Patriot Invitational

AU swimmers dived into the pool against some fierce competition this weekend at the Patriot Invitational. As of Sunday morning, the AU women's team was ninth overall and the AU men's team was eighth. The three-day meet, hosted by George Mason University, featured eleven teams - the hosts, AU, Duke, Yale, Md.

Five-game thriller leads to fifth PL championship

There are two lessons a person would take away from the Patriot League Volleyball Tournament: Never underestimate the heart of a champion and never count out AU in a match no matter how big the deficit. In two straight matches, AU came back from within a game of elimination to earn its fifth straight Patriot League title and trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Hadavi, women's hoops tired of street clothes

Tala Hadavi keeps the high-end clothing stores in Friendship Heights and Pentagon City in business...and much to her chagrin. Ever since she's arrived on campus almost three years ago, injury and NCAA regulations have forced her to spend more time in skirts and high heels on the bench than she has doing what she does best: draining threes and spearheading the Eagles' attack.

Men's soccer misses the target in PL title game

The AU men's soccer team missed out on its fourth Patriot League championship in five years Sunday, losing to Lafayette (13-4-2) in the PL final, 1-0, at Reeves Field. Lafayette sophomore Luke Sullivan scored the game's only goal less than four minutes into the first half.

Yohannes charge secures men's return to nationals

As AU and Princeton's last runners crossed the line in Saturday's NCAA Mideast Regional, the team race for second place - and a spot in the NCAA Championships - was too close to call. Princeton's top two runners finished fifth and sixth, both ahead of eighth-place AU sophomore Steve Hallinan on the course in Bethlehem, Pa.

Field hockey unravels late vs. Terps

AU field hockey coach Steve Jennings thought his team was in good position for almost all of Sunday's match at Maryland in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Never mind that the Terrapins controlled the shots and penalty corners the whole day. The teams were knotted in a scoreless tie for almost an hour of play - not a bad place to be against the top-ranked Terps.
