Eagles top Army in extra, extra time

Maybe the AU men's basketball team believed a nine-game winning streak against Army dating back to when Kennedy roamed the West Wing and its 5-11 record were enough for a second straight Patriot League win. But instead it took two overtimes and two game-tying 3-point shots from junior guard Andre Ingram for AU to escape any talk of Army being due with a 65-63 win Wednesday at Bender Arena.

Women falter against Army

The AU women's basketball team continued a disappointing month by losing to the Army Black Knights Tuesday night at Bender Arena, 75-66, to drop to 4-13, 1-3 in the Patriot League. The Eagles used a strong first half to build a two-point halftime lead, but an 12-1 Army run to open the second half put the Eagles behind for good.

Bad calls, sloppy play can't mar Super Bowl

Last weekend, Pittsburgh stunned Indianapolis in a thrilling 21-18 win, while the Broncos ended the Patriots' run as champions with a 27-13 victory. But both games were marred by poor officiating that had fans, the media, coaches and even some players voicing their outrage.

Hoop notes: Jones: Carr has long-range leeway

December in D.C. is cold, and cold means snow, but at Bender Arena Saturday it rained 3's. Twenty-five of them to be exact, and in the AU men's basketball matchup with Towson, that divulged a little secret: Freshman Garrison Carr likes to shoot, and unlike most of his teammates, he's allowed to jack up the 3-ball whenever he wants.

Carr, Eagles rain 3's on Tigers in win

Everyone knew Garrison Carr was known for his shot in high school. It was only in Saturday's men's basketball game against Towson that they found out just how good his shot can be. The freshman guard cruised to a career-high 25 points and made six of AU's record 15 3-pointers in a 74-70 win over the Tigers at Bender Arena.

Women's hoops endures Quakers in overtime

There are certain games where a coach learns about its team, for better or worse. Saturday, AU women's basketball coach Melissa McFerrin learned a lot about her young squad during its resilient 70-68 overtime win over Pennsylvania. The Eagles blew an 11-point halftime lead and Joey Rhoads hit a 3-pointer for the Quakers to send the game into overtime.

Bring old BB&T back now

Theoretically, changing the format of the BB&T Classic basketball tournament to feature a slate of teams from the D.C.-metro area was a good idea. In reality, it transformed the once nationally renowned tournament into a shell of itself, featuring two unentertaining and unwatchable games and a third game that would have been just as exciting as a stand-alone contest.

Men's basketball gets elusive first win

After an embarrassing 0-6 start, the AU men's basketball team dominated Mount St. Mary's (1-5) Wednesday, 80-60, in its first home game of the season.ÿÿ Junior forward Brayden Billbe led AU (1-6) with 19 points and six rebounds, but a steady 4-to-1 assist-turnover ratio by freshman guard Derrick Mercer sealed the win.

Second-half troubles continue for women's hoops at Furman

The AU women's basketball team suffered a disappointing 61-48 defeat to Furman Tuesday night in Greenville, S.C. The loss drops AU to 2-5 about a month away from Patriot League play. The Eagles started well and took an 18-15 lead with eight minutes left in the first half after an Abby Lipskis layup.

Wrestlers rally late, drop Terps

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With the AU wrestling team trailing at Maryland, 12-3, midway through Sunday's meet, AU coach Mark Cody delivered an order to senior Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov. "We're going to need you to get the fall," he told the sixth-ranked 165-pounder.

AU swimmers get share of top finishes at Rutgers meet The AU men's and women's swim teams combined for eight top-five finishes in the first two days of the Rutgers Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Seniors Val Fomenko and Kevin Falkenstein led AU taking individual wins, Fomenko in a tie in the men's 100-yard fly and Falkenstein in the men's 100 backstroke Saturday.

Women's hoops splits home weekend

December 5

The AU women's basketball team dismantled Wagner, 71-58, Saturday behind 38 combined points from revitalized senior guard Tala Hadavi and junior guard Tara Williams. Hadavi rebounded from a four-game shooting slump, sinking her first five shots from the field.
