Juiced stars should not be squeezed from Hall

·

I despise Sammy Sosa. Never liked him. I disliked him because I thought he was a hotdog, a phony, a cancer in his clubhouse, and because he played for the Chicago Cubs. I reveled when a corked bat came flying out of his bat and when it became obvious to everyone else last year he was a steroid user, going from the Incredible Hulk to the Incredible Shrinking Man.

Phil Bender spoiled by Holy Cross

In a frantic pace Saturday at Bender Arena, the AU men's basketball team put on its all-too-familiar display of immaturity and fell to Holy Cross, 69-62. AU (9-16, 5-7 Patriot League) finished with 16 turnovers and 23 personal fouls. "What's going through my head is our lack of preparation for this game," junior guard Andre Ingram said following the uninspired performance on Phil Bender day.

Why can't we Phil Bender all year long?

Kansas' Allen Fieldhouse, Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium, UCLA's Pauley Pavilion, AU's Bender Arena. These are the arenas that make college basketball fans across America salivate to think about, the hoops temples where legends are born. OK, so maybe I am exaggerating a little bit with that last one.

Prediction: predict the unpredictable come March

Dazzling dunks, suspenseful overtimes and an incredible display of passion by the players are defining characteristics of college basketball. However, this season can also be defined by another word: unpredictability. Yes, main powerhouse teams, such as Duke, North Carolina and North Carolina State, have maintained their usual elevated standards.

AU's runners are going the distance

While the snow that still covers campus following a storm over the weekend makes it seem as though the start of spring sports is far away, the AU men's indoor track team is winding down one of its most successful indoor seasons ever. Heading into the Patriot League Championships this weekend at Navy, the team holds the fastest PL times in the 800-, 1,000-, 3,000- and 5,000-meter events, as well as in the mile.

Trade will work magic on Milicic

Folks, the Olympics are underway (I know, I know, you're part of the entire earth's population that isn't watching) and already these games are more about who's gone (Apolo Anton Ohno, Michelle Kwan and Bode Miller) rather than who's there (a flying tomato, another Sarah Hughes and a hot ice dancer).

AU athletics' new spring

The AU men's basketball season reaches its pinnacle Saturday at the annual Phil Bender event against Holy Cross. However, barring a miracle run through the Patriot League tournament and an even more miraculous run through the NCAA tournament, the AU winter sports season will mostly be winding down by the start of March.

Something was missing on this Super Sunday

A few years ago I played in an indoor soccer league where my games were on Sunday nights during the winter. As I gazed at my schedule when it was passed out at the end of a team practice, I noticed one of our games was on Martin Luther King Day. I asked a friend why we weren't playing the game on the previous Sunday, to which he replied, "Come on man, that's Super Bowl Sunday.
