Lacrosse crushes Longwood in final home game

Led by Lauren Aksionoff and Jackie Lane, the Eagles were able to put on an offensive barrage Wednesday afternoon against Longwood, defeating the Lancers 20-8 at Jacobs Field. The win was the third-straight for AU, who finished with a 5-1 record at home this season.

Gymnastics gains credibility in third year as club

For senior Rachel Centariczki, graduation day is a bittersweet one. Along with fellow senior, Sarah Bishop, Centariczki started the AU gymnastics club three years ago, and has watched it grow into the program it has become today. This past week, the team competed at the National Association of Intercollegiate Gymnastics Club's annual national tournament, which was held in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Fennell, Yohannes lead track, qualify for NCAA regionals at weekend Bucknell Invitational

The American University track team split up this past weekend to compete at the Bucknell Outdoor Classic on Friday night and the University of Virginia Invitational on Saturday. The 5000m race was the most talked about event at Friday's meet as senior Brendan Fennell went head to head with Matt Froys, the Patriot League Indoor 5000m Champion of Bucknell.

Gorman big on Senior Day; leads lax to win over Bucknell

Playing in her last home Patriot League game, Caithlin Gorman took advantage of the Senior Day festivities by scoring three goals and one assist to help the Eagles to a 17-6 win over Bucknell on Saturday. The victory improves AU's record to 3-1 in PL play and 7-6 overall.

Lacrosse dominates net in decisive win over Lafayette, 19-8

The AU women's lacrosse team defeated Lafayette 19-8 on Saturday, paced by senior Lauren Aksionoff's career-high six goals. With the win, the Eagles improve to 6-6 on the season and 2-1 in Patriot League play. "It was huge to have Lauren play a great game," Coach Katie Woods said.

Fennell, Lanz help track teams find success at Texas Relays

The distance medley team finished second while Conor Lanz placed ninth in the 1500 meters to cap AU's participation in the Texas Relays held in Austin, Texas this past weekend. The Eagle's elite men traveled south on Friday to compete against some of the top individual runners and relay teams in the country in preparation for the Patriot League championships at the beginning of May.

Three blind predictions: Pondering the 2007 MLB season

Yogi Berra once said, "In baseball, you don't know nothing." Truer words had never been uttered by the man who once said, "Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical." I mean honestly, do any of us really know anything about this game? If you were the one guy who on a drunken limb told your buddy that midseason rookie call-up Anibel Sanchez, who started the season in AA, would be the guy to break the longest no-hitter drought in Major League Baseball history, well, hell man, give me a call, we need to find some real estate! Lacrosse doomed by slow start, fall to UMBC, 15-9

The AU women's lacrosse team lost its second straight match Wednesday afternoon, falling to the UMBC Retrievers 15-9 in Baltimore, Md. The loss drops the Eagles below the .500 mark on the season at 5-6. The Eagles were down early, as two goals by Ali Levendusky sandwiched around a tally by Abbey Swift gave the Retrievers a quick 3-0 advantage only three minutes into the game.

Take a moment to look at Jacobs field and chances are, unless you happen to get there when women's lacrosse is practicing, or the track team is working on its stride, you probably won't see much action taking place. No, the deficit of teams using the field is not due in part to recent findings of radiation from WW1 weaponry testing; rather, it's due to our lack of funding from the athletic department.

The American University men's and women's track teams continued on with their winning ways this weekend as the Eagles traveled to Maryland on Saturday to compete in the Maryland Invitational. Not only was AU able to take home seven top ten finishes, but also two wins gained by the men's team.

G-town goes down in hyped matchup

All you needed to know about Georgetown last Saturday night is that at one bar, things got so crowded before the game that the owner volunteered to send people in line on a bus to see the game at his "other bar" in Columbia, Md. Other than that, everything pretty much went as expected: the big men (Hibbert, Noah, and Oden) dominated, and Florida and Ohio State both won.

The AU women's lacrosse team lost to Holy Cross at Worcester, Mass., on Saturday, 15-5, ending their four-game winning streak. The defeat drops the Eagles to 5-5 on the season and 1-1 in Patriot League play. The Crusaders jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.

Women's softball not afraid to play ball with the boys

If you wake up early on a Saturday morning and head out to the William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex, you might notice a group of young women taking batting practice or lunging for fly balls. No, the university hasn't sprung for a new varsity sport, but the AU women's club softball team has been filling the spring athletic void quite nicely.
