Darfur inaction unacceptable

·

I knew I was in for the long haul when she wiped her snot on my hand. "Kleenex! Kleenex!" I told her. None were readily available, so she grabbed the closest thing within sight. My hand. Her nose began to run again. At one point there was a direct route of snot from her nose to her upper lip and then into her mouth.

Integrity policy easy to cheat on

·

Integrity is a moral code that demands the highest ethical behavior of a person. Today's society has increased pressures for university students to take the easy route in life. Theoretically, members of our own university who choose to disregard a rule or uphold standards of psychopathic plagiarizers will suffer in the long run.

Staff Editorial: Another AU decision sans student opinion

AU announced Tuesday that it has acquired a trial subscription to Audible Magic, a program that will disable the illegal downloading of copyrighted materials on campus. The trial will run from next week through April, when AU will decide whether or not to permanently purchase the program.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor: If we were able to go back a few years and stop President Bush from repealing the estate tax and enacting his tax cuts (that are skewed to the rich), not only would we NOT have such a large budget deficit, but we would actualy have a $20 billion budget SURPLUS! The math goes as such: The federal budget for 2005 is projected to be $2.

Opinion: Column unfair to liberal profs

Eric Fantegrossi's Feb. 14 article, "Academic Freedom Essential," was misleading to the point of being offensive, and the writer should issue an apology at once. Fantegrossi's column argues that "liberal" professors ought to "teach rather than propagandize" and that academic freedom is essential to the creation of an informed populous.

Opinion: Former opponents endorse Taylor

Today is the run-off election for Student Confederation president. The choice before you is between Kyle Taylor and Joe Gallina, and we hope you all vote, especially since the margin of victory could be as small as the four votes that separated Taylor and Gallina in the general election.

Staff Editorial: Vote Taylor in SG presidential run-off

In last week's Student Government presidential election, Joe Gallina and Kyle Taylor both won about 30 percent of the vote, necessitating a run-off election between the two for Thursday. Though our endorsed candidate, James Gardner, did not earn enough votes to be part of the run-off, we will follow Gardner's lead and pass on our endorsement to Taylor in the run-off.

Opinion: Before cutting teams, AU should have asked students

As you may have heard, American University's Athletics Department announced that Men's and Women's Tennis and Men's Golf will be disbanded at the end of the year. There was no prior warning of this decision, and the players seemingly have no recourse. The University should not have the ultimate authority to disband student athletics without some form of student review.

Libs, take back the term!

A friend of mine, who calls himself a moderate Democrat, commented to me the other day that he finds amusement in the fact that liberals often style themselves as "progressives" and that, in his assessment, they are doing so because "it sounds better." This friend has a point in that politics is often a matter of definition and perspective.

All Thumbs

Thumbs Up Student Advocacy Pamphlet ... This week, SAC released a pamphlet titled "Before you do something Stupid Read this Guide" that explains what rights students and campus residents have. This is a great and useful idea by the Student Advocacy Center.

Staff editorial: AU makes unkind cut

The AU Athletics Department announced Thursday that it will discontinue the Men's Golf and Men's and Women's Tennis programs after this season ends. Though the decision was deliberated for more than a year, the Athletics Department never made the AU community aware until after the decision was made.

Staff Editorial: Don't burn banners

A nylon banner advertising James Gardner's candidacy for SC president was stolen from the Quad on Saturday. The thief apparently burned the strings holding up the sign and made off with it. The weight of the sign and the metal grommets suggests that it wasn't a random decision to yank the sign, but a premeditated act to get away with it without anyone noticing it being dragged through the Quad.

Staff Editorial: Exterminate the Mice!

For several weeks, mice have been found in the dorms of Tenley Campus. Far from the cute, cuddly mice the Disney Channel advertises, these rodents live between rooms in Tenley and frighten residents. We are fairly sure Luke from the 1990 film "The Witches" is not enrolled in AU; aside from him, there should be no mice in dorms.

Opinion: Thompson a true American legend

I wasn't old enough to really feel the blow of the death of Kurt Cobain. Don't act like I'm some weirdo from that generation who was the only person who wasn't listening to the late icon. I was 10 years old. Most fourth-graders are lighting farts, not wearing torn grunge pants and drinking all night.

Opinion: Take money from Ladner rather than axing teams

It is with disappointment that I write this letter regarding AU's decision to cut three of its current sports programs - Men's and Women's Tennis and Men's Golf. According to Athletic Director Joni Comstock on AU Athletics' Web site, the program cuts are being made to "target our efforts into sports that will further augment our athletics profile, and will build support from our former student-athletes and friends.
