AU's men's rugby club team filed an appeal against the citations from the Recreational Sports and Fitness Department that caused the team to lose university sponsorship, according to rugby team president and The Eagle's managing editor for photography Dave Stone.

Cheh asks Fenty to fund WWI dig study

D.C. Councilmember Mary Cheh, D-Ward 3, has requested that a portion of the city budget be allocated to fund a study on the health hazards of World War I-era munitions in Spring Valley, according to Patrick Leibach, Cheh's legislative assistant. Cheh directly contacted Mayor Adrian Fenty about her request for $750,000 to fund the study.

Scherr: Gov't must change environment policy stance

If serious change is going to occur to prevent global warming, it needs to happen soon and people will need to demand change from the government, Jacob Scherr, director of the Natural Resources Defense Council's International program, said Thursday night. The Bush administration's actions have not helped the situation, he said.

WMATA plans pilot of digital signs in system

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority plans to introduce a network of digital signs throughout the Metrorail and Metrobus systems that will display service information and advertising. If the project proceeds on schedule, Metro plans to start piloting the new signs by the end of this year.

The mass shootings committed by Steven Kazmierczak at Northern Illinois University last week and by Seung-Hui Cho at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University last April have left experts rushing to prevent such unforeseen acts of violence from occurring in the future.

SG considers smoking rules

Last night, an Undergraduate Senate joint committee passed a bill that would restrict people from smoking too close to buildings, but would not create a campus-wide smoking ban. The entire senate will vote on the bill at their Sunday meeting, which is open to the public.

Vandals strike in MGC, Butler

Vandals targeted several offices on Mary Graydon Center's third and fourth floors, as well as the Office of Special Events in Butler Pavilion Sunday night, according to Public Safety Chief Michael McNair. The perpetrators apparently used fire extinguishers and expelled the fluid through the cracks below several office doors, covering each room, according to Danna Walker, a professor in the School of Communication and The Eagle's faculty consultant.

Students petition for Bravo channel

Members of the 2011 Class Council are leading a movement to bring the Bravo channel to AU's cable lineup. Bravo, a channel owned by NBC Universal, features shows like "Project Runway" and "Top Chef." Josh Casey, president of the Class of 2011, said that he looked into adding the channel in AU residence halls after hearing requests from his constituents.

Carlson discusses 2008 election, opines on presidential candidates

Illinois Sen. Barack Obama has the best chance of winning both the Democratic nomination and the general election, MSNBC talk show host and political pundit Tucker Carlson said at an AU College Republicans event Wednesday night. "If you're betting on this election, be careful, but here's what to look for: Foreign policy to come back as an important subject and for the Obama campaign to do something crazy," Carlson said.

Facebook users can now delete their accounts completely after the company added instructions Tuesday to the help page on its Web site. The social network's actions come days after The New York Times reported that many users were having trouble completely deleting their accounts.

AU's Residence Hall Association received two awards at the Central Atlantic Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls' business meeting Feb. 9, according to Dorothy Mejia, RHA president. Centennial Hall Resident Director Leah Kreimer received an award for "Adviser of the Year," while the entire RHA beat The University of Maryland, Baltimore for the RHA Building Block Award, which is given to the residence hall association showing the most improvement to its environment within the last academic year.

The Undergraduate Senate upheld a veto of the election reform bill and passed a resolution sending condolences over the shooting at Northern Illinois University during their meeting yesterday. Student Government President Joe Vidulich vetoed "A Bill to Ensure the Credibility of Election Bill," which the senate passed last week.

AU recognized for community service on honor roll

AU recently earned placement on the 2007 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll in the "with Distinction" category for commendable service and service directed toward aiding disadvantaged youth. The award, which the Corporation for National and Community Service started giving out in 2006, recognizes colleges and universities that show "innovative, effective and exemplary community service," according to a press release from Learn and Serve America, an independent federal agency of the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Nigeria program to start in fall '08

AU students who are able to study abroad in Nigeria beginning this fall will gain valuable experience on the American University of Nigeria's campus, AUN President Michael C. Smith said at an information session Thursday. "The students will be immersed with students from all over Nigeria - an international experience like none other," Smith said.

Students start T-shirt, shoe businesses

Nearly 67 percent of teenagers who participated in a Junior Achievement Worldwide survey released Nov. 6 wanted to start their own businesses, according to information on the organization's Web site. Two students studying at AU - Dan Lachman and Kim Mesches - have turned dreams of owning their own businesses into a reality.
