Louisiana students bribe registrar for grades

Southern University announced that it plans to revoke the diplomas of 10 students who bribed a former assistant registrar to illegally change their transcripts, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education. Federal charges have been brought against Cleo Carroll for receiving $9,100 from former students to improve their transcripts between 1995 and 2003 after a two-and-a-half year investigation, according to The Chronicle.

Carr, Eagles rain 3's on Tigers in win

Everyone knew Garrison Carr was known for his shot in high school. It was only in Saturday's men's basketball game against Towson that they found out just how good his shot can be. The freshman guard cruised to a career-high 25 points and made six of AU's record 15 3-pointers in a 74-70 win over the Tigers at Bender Arena.

Semester's end brings room changes

The end of the semester brings about many changes for students, including the decision to switch residence halls and start over from scratch. Nov. 29 to Dec. 2 marked the "Open Room Change Process", where students were able to stop by the Housing and Dining Office in Anderson Hall.

Since it is the holiday season, there are a few gifts I would like to give out. But instead of Christmas gifts, I'm going to give out eight presents to various athletes for each night of Hanukkah. For the first night, I would like to give Tim Duncan and Rodger Federer each a better personality.

After a serious campaign to boot cars with oustanding parking fines, sometimes reaching the thousands of dollars, Public Safety has decided to hire an outside company to handle overdie fines, hoping to impart they actually do mean business with all those tickets students often toss to the floorboard and ignore.

Hoop notes: Jones: Carr has long-range leeway

December in D.C. is cold, and cold means snow, but at Bender Arena Saturday it rained 3's. Twenty-five of them to be exact, and in the AU men's basketball matchup with Towson, that divulged a little secret: Freshman Garrison Carr likes to shoot, and unlike most of his teammates, he's allowed to jack up the 3-ball whenever he wants.

Campus brief

The Catholic Community Choir performed their second annual Christmas Concert on Saturday in the Battelle-Tompkins Atrium. The choir sang traditional Christmas songs such as "Angels We Have Heard on High," "O Holy Night" and "Joy to the World." Approximately 30 people attended the concert, including Karin Thornton, the associate Catholic Chaplain at AU.

Programs release study abroad guidelines

Two international organizations released guidelines for study abroad programs last week that have students questioning their use in making study abroad experiences better, according to insidehighered.com. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization collaborated to release the Guidelines on Quality Provisions in Cross-Border Higher Education.

In addition to the impending pressures of finals week, students planning on studying abroad in the spring have the additional task of preparing for a new culture. Although the semester-long process of applications, course selection and gathering official documents can be daunting, the AU Abroad office offers help and guidance to students preparing to go abroad.

Checcio to leave AU after successful fundraising

Al Checcio, vice president of university relations, will leave AU this month after helping launch the school's most ambitious fundraising campaign ever and doubling the percentage of alumni who donate to the university. Checcio will take a similar position at Fordham University in New York, and his former duties will be divided among AU departments until the next president names a replacement.

Southwest airlines jet skids off runway A Southwest Airlines jet landing at Chicago's Midway International Airport skidded off a runway and slammed into vehicles on a nearby street, killing a 6-year-old boy and injuring 10 others Thursday night. Runway conditions were reported to be "fair to poor" by a pilot who landed just minutes ahead of the jet, according to www.

Women's hoops endures Quakers in overtime

There are certain games where a coach learns about its team, for better or worse. Saturday, AU women's basketball coach Melissa McFerrin learned a lot about her young squad during its resilient 70-68 overtime win over Pennsylvania. The Eagles blew an 11-point halftime lead and Joey Rhoads hit a 3-pointer for the Quakers to send the game into overtime.

Classic musical triumphs in the nation's capital

"Les Mis?rables," the critically acclaimed musical that has entertained millions for over 20 years, has come to the District's National Theatre just in time for the holiday season.
