Sports brief: The Mount tops women's tennis

The AU women's tennis team's top two earned victories, lbut the Eagles ost the match Tuesday at Mount. St. Mary's, 4-2. Junior Julia Colarusso and sophomore Malvina DeLaCanal each won, 2-0. Colarusso defeated Jen Isosue, 6-3, 6-3, while DeLaCanal beat Katie Muething, 6-1, 6-2.

Metro crash in 2005 leads to improved safety

Metro officials are planning to install rollback protection on trains within the next year due to last year's collision in which a train rolled backward for 78 seconds and slammed into another train, according to Metro spokeswoman Candace Smith. The operator of the runaway train at the Woodley Park Station in November 2004 failed to break because he was probably asleep, federal safety officials said last week.

Sidelined by injuries, Hadavi still found ways to contribute

Tala Hadavi was recruited to AU as a transfer from Virginia Commonwealth to be the leader of a program that was headed for its first NCAA berth. In two years of eligibility, she had one of the most up-and-down careers in Patriot League history. She played only eight games her junior year before blowing out her knee, and 22 games this year before suffering the same injury on her other knee.

Sushi: a treat much treasured

In the '80s, Americans had several things to count on. Ronald Reagan. BMWs. The overwhelmingly huge trend of sushi consumption. As cult rock band The Bogmen sang in their song "Suddenly," "Back home I use that for fertilizer." Nevertheless, as the oldest of us undergraduates were likely born in 1983, our comprehension of this American bastardization of a trend may be lacking.

George Mason University professor Dr. Debra Bergoffen answers questions Wednesday afternoon following her lecture on rape. Bergoffen's speech, entitled "How Rape Became a Crime Against Humanity: History of an Error, Modernity and the Problem of Evil," was sponsored by the Women and Politics Institute.

Florida law requires high school students to declare major

The Florida State House recently passed a law that will require incoming high school freshmen to declare a major, just like college students, according to CNN.com. The bill was proposed by Gov. Jeb Bush to prepare students for the real world and reduce their state high school dropout rates by making classes more interesting, according to CNN.

In that order, these numbers are the approximate amount of money AU undergrads pay yearly through the UG Activity Fee included in their bills, the approximate number of AU undergrads, the approximate number of AU undergrads who showed up to a Town Hall meeting on Tuesday night to watch the three (yes, that's the last number) candidates up for SG President this year.

Has so much ever happened in one month? March is always an exciting month for sports, with the NBA and NHL playoff races heating up, baseball starting spring training, and, of course, the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. The past month, however, has surpassed all expectations in terms of excitement and sheer volume.

Married musical 'mates' make crowd dance, swoon

Saturday night at the State Theatre in Falls Church, Va., indie pop duo Mates of State charmed a youthful suburban audience (and its parents) with the band's signature spunk, charisma and adoration for one another. Mates of State was preceded by two opening acts, Hail Social and Maria Taylor (of Azure Ray and Now It's Overhead fame).

Employers flock to job and internship fair

Hundreds of potential employers and staffing agencies lined the walls of Bender Arena while students wandered around with resumes and business cards in hand as part of the Career Center's biannual Job and Internship Fair last Thursday. "Employers are really starting to recognize that they need to get on the bandwagon," said Career Center Executive Director Katherine Stahl, referring to the high employment rates for college graduates.

As winter turns the corner to spring, the AU men's and women's track teams look to continue their success from the indoor season in their upcoming outdoor campaign. Coming off their best finishes in school history at the Patriot League championship meet - third and fifth, respectively - the two squads now try to carry over this momentum through the rest of the season.

New fraternity hosts eating race

The new fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon sponsored a "Wing Bowl" Sunday afternoon on the Quad. Students were encouraged to sign up in teams to see who could eat the most chicken wings. Challenges included wings covered in wasabi sauce. The Delta Gamma sorority came in first place over The Eagle team winning a trophy and a $50 gift certificate to Wingos in Georgetown.

When Jordan Knotts checked himself into George Washington University Hospital in the fall of 2004, he thought he was doing himself a service. He was suffering from severe depression and was contemplating suicide. Once GW's administration caught wind of the visit, however, he was suspended and barred from campus, since he was labeled a danger to students.

Festival celebrates journalism on film

As part of the School of Communication's Reel Journalism Film Festival, SOC professor Bill Gentile offered a sneak preview of his documentary, "Dateline Afghanistan: Reporting the Forgotten War" on Saturday night. Shown at American University's Greenberg Theater, the 60-minute film chronicles the month Gentile spent in Afghanistan following fellow reporters and photographers, as well as an embedded assignment with U.

Activist promotes democracy in Burma

Human rights activist and former political prisoner Bo Kyi spoke to about 200 people last Tuesday night about his personal contributions to the campaign for democracy in Burma. Without democracy we cannot speak out, Kyi said. If you practice basic human rights you are in prison.
