Tuesday was an exciting day for music stores, as two of the most famous pop artists of our time released new albums. After their last record, "Never Gone," flopped, Backstreet Boys are attempting a comeback - again. On the same triumphant day, another infamous pop star released her newest album.

An amplified focus on the genocide in Darfur has drawn international attention away from tragedies occurring in south Sudan, filmmaker Jen Marlowe said at a panel discussion Tuesday evening. "The peace process that was started [in South Sudan] ... has been allowed to slide back into what looks like a slide back into civil war," Marlowe said.

Perhaps to the chagrin of Halloween partygoers, the District's much-needed cab drivers intended to strike from Wednesday night into Thursday morning, and we at The Eagle don't blame them. Although we stated in our Sept. 20 editorial that the District was long overdue for a cab fare overhaul, we did not exactly advocate a solution involving a mayoral order.

Cabs strike to protest meter system

D.C. cab drivers went on strike yesterday to protest Mayor Adrian Fenty's decision to require time-and-distance meters instead of the zone system, leaving cab companies scrambling to provide cabs for Halloween revelers. Representatives from SoberRide, the Washington Regional Alcohol Program's free cab campaign for partygoers, expressed confidence Wednesday afternoon that the campaign would be unhurt by the strike.

Vandals at Frederick Community College in Maryland are apparently targeting men's restrooms in protest of a smoking ban enacted by the school's trustees last spring, United Press International reported.
