D.C. takes deep breath with Yoga Week

As part of D.C. Yoga Week 2008, local studios offered free or $5 classes from April 12 through April 18, including a Sunday afternoon session on the National Mall. I wanted to use this week to restore balance to my life of too little sleep, and too much sugar and caffeine.

Musical brings high-volume energy

Ticket? Check. Program? Check. Can of Ultra-Clutch hairspray? Check. The cast of "Hairspray" arrived in D.C. for their five-performance run April 15 at the Warner Theatre. Some musicals lose their sparkle when transitioned from the stage to the screen and back to the stage, but luckily this touring cast refuses to let their energy - or hair - fall flat.

Tuesday, April 8 A student reported she was stuck in an elevator in Letts Hall. Public Safety officers, Facilities Management and D.C. Fire Department responded. DCFD freed the student from the elevator. Facilities Management reset the elevator and placed it out of service for repairs.

B-ball claims NCAA's AU grad rate is wrong

National College Athletic Association statistics that report only 18 percent of the members of the AU men's basketball team graduate are misleading, according to head basketball coach Jeff Jones. He said the information used in the statistics came from data that is at least eight years old - from before Jones came to AU in 2000.

Animal rights activist and French movie star Brigitte Bardot faces prosecution for the fifth time for "inciting racial hatred" against Muslims, the Reuters news agency reported Tuesday. Authorities have charged and fined Bardot for the same offense on four previous occasions since 1997, according to Reuters.

Staff Editorial: A green rule of thumb

Tuesday is Earth Day, and there is no better time for students to reflect on the ways they can make a difference and lessen their environmental footprint. Within the past year, we've witnessed a healthy and much-needed dose of environmentalism at AU. Eco-Sense has done a great job promoting the green cause, and their recent initiative to teach and certify environmentally friendly offices on campus is incredibly perceptive.

JSA remembers Holocaust with ceremony

Holocaust Remembrance Week is a very powerful event for the campus community, according to Jewish Student Association President Cheryl Saferstein. "I think its one of the most important series that our club puts on throughout the year," Saferstein said. JSA hosted a week of events to remember the Holocaust, which began with a Holocaust remembrance Shabbat service Friday night, according to Holocaust Remembrance Week Chair Rachel Regberg.

Corrections for April 13, 2008

In "Alum Caccavale opts out of MLS play," it was reported that players under 25 years old must be on a developmental contract. In fact, anyone signed to a developmental contract must be under the age of 25. In "Study: Adjuncts, big classes may discourage freshmen," professor Whiting Wicker was paraphrased as saying "An AU adjunc teaches up to three courses per semester and must have a doctoral degree and hold office hours.


UPENDED -The Southeast Division champions, the Washington Capitals, will have to stay on their feet to stick with the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round.

Foreign students studying science, technology, mathematics and engineering are now able to stay in the U.S. for a longer period of time after graduation if an employer petitions in their favor. The Department of Homeland Security recently revised the regulations surrounding the H-1B visa, for foreign-born professionals, due to increased lobbying by U.

An unknown assailant fatally stabbed one man and critically injured another man who were riding all-terrain vehicles through a wooded area in Prince George's County Tuesday night, The Washington Post reported yesterday. The attacker jumped the two ATV riders near Surratsville High School - a few miles south of Andrews Air Force Base.

SUNY students take on FDA blood policy

Student leaders at the State University of New York at Binghamton are urging their university to rethink its relationship with the American Red Cross, which enforces a Food and Drug Administration policy banning men who have sex with other men from donating blood.
