"With parents' stock portfolios plummeting, it makes private schools look out of reach with their tuition," said Martha Starr, an economics professor in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Core Survey shows AU drinks above national average rate

AU students drink alcohol more often and in greater numbers than average college students nationwide, according to results of a college drug and alcohol survey made available Friday. More than 50 percent of surveyed AU students reported binge drinking in the last two weeks, according to the Core Alcohol and Drug Survey, which AU administered in February.

Baylor buys SAT scores

Baylor University's recent discontinuation of a policy to compensate students for retaking the SATs prompted discussion about the emphasis colleges place on nationwide rankings. The university, located in Waco, Texas, offered incoming freshman students $300 in bookstore credit to retake the SATs this past June.

It seems unbelievable that a college would actually pay students to retake the SATs, but that's exactly what occurred at Baylor University until just recently. Baylor paid already-admitted students $300 in bookstore credit to retake the test; students earned another $1,000 if they improved their scores by 50 points.

Womens soccer

October 27

Junior forward Mary Reigler scored in the 67th minute to give the AU women's soccer team an eventual 1-1 tie against College of the Holy Cross Friday. The tie improves the team's record to 5-9-2 on the season and 2-1-2 in the Patriot League. After playing to a scoreless first half, Holy Cross was able to get on the scoreboard first on a goal by freshman defender Katherine Donnelly in the 57th minute to give the Crusaders as 1-0 lead.

Men's soccer soars into first in PL

Thanks to junior defender Dor Yasur's first goal of the season, the AU men's soccer team remains undefeated in Patriot League play this season, following a 1-0 victory over College of the Holy Cross at Reeves Field Saturday. The win improves the Eagles' record to 7-5-2 and 3-0-1 in the league, which was good enough for first place.

Field hockey alone in first place in PL

The No. 18 AU field hockey team claimed sole possession of first place in the Patriot League this weekend by defeating Lafayette College at Reeves Field Saturday. The Eagles improve to 9-6 on the season and 4-0 in the Patriot League. The Leopards were the stronger of the two teams during the first half, taking four shots on goal against junior goalkeeper Alyssa Poorman but she saved everything that came her way to preserve the scoreless tie entering halftime.

Mens and womens swimming

The AU men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned a split against Providence College this weekend, as the women defeated the Friars 192-99 while the men fell 209-109. The women's squad won 11 of the 13 events in the meet, with Sophomore Dorothy Issacs and freshman Alexandra Wessel earning two individual victories each.

AU women's volleyball swept both opponents this weekend, defeating the U.S. Military Academy and College of the Holy Cross by matching 3-0 scores, to add to its season-high 12-match winning streak. The two victories improve the Eagles' record to 17-6 on the season and a perfect 9-0 in the Patriot League.

Public Safety response scrutinized

AU Public Safety and some university students disagree about whether officers responded appropriately to a medical emergency in Mary Graydon Center Wednesday evening. A male student fell and began having a seizure in MGC's lobby around 5:05 p.m. Public Safety officers arrived roughly five to six minutes after the initial call, according to University Center Assistant Director of Operations Patrick Ledesma who witnessed the incident.

COMMUNITY CALLED TO GIVE INPUT ON STRATEGIC PLAN In an effort to gain the AU community's feedback on the strategic planning process, the Strategic Planning Steering Committee will hold its final town hall forum Tuesday. This will be the final community-wide discussion of the Strategic Plan before the board of trustees reviews the plan in mid-November, according to the Strategic Plan Web site.
