Obama offers pragmatic change

Much has been made of the connection between Abraham Lincoln, the esteemed 16th president, and Barack Obama, our new and popular 44th. In a show of both physical and transcendent connection, the new president even swore his oath on the same bible as did Lincoln 148 years and 28 presidents before.

AU student shines at black tie gala

Ticket to inaugural gala: $500. Gown: $40. Metro fare to get to inaugural gala: $5. Attending a swanky event with over a dozen open bars: Priceless. On Friday afternoon, I found myself in a jam. I never would have imagined I would be in: scouring the stores around Metro Center for a cheap dress that would be acceptable to wear at a black tie inaugural gala.

BARACK YOUR HEART OUT - A record-breaking number of people came out to the National Mall to watch President Barack Obama be sworn in as president. Several thousand ticket-holders were unable to enter the Capitol grounds in time to see the ceremony.

Crowds gather to witness Inauguration

Inauguration Day was a chance for some AU students to witness a historical and inspiring ceremony in the company of millions of other Americans, but for others it meant freezing in endless lines without ever catching a glimpse of newly-inaugurated President Barack Obama.

'Mall Cop' disappoints with cop-out comedy

As far as expectations go, "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" is exactly what it appears to be. Kevin James plays the titular fat, moronic-but-lovable loser who dreams of being the hero, but finds himself stuck as a rent-a-cop in a non-descript New Jersey mall. Unfortunately, the mall is not the only thing that is non-descript about "Mall Cop.

New folkies experiment with old sound

Folk music has always stood as the anthem of the working man, whether it be Woody Guthrie singing about striking labor unions or the proud acoustic traditions of South American peasantry. It's a simple enough formula: give a person a guitar or banjo and a lifetime of human experience, and out comes a sound raw with emotion.

Opinion

Obama's centrism doesn't suit base

On a frigid December night in Des Moines, Iowa, - seven days before the first caucus - the Democratic race was tight and Barack Obama was playing his strongest card: preaching a new, post-partisan brand of politics. Obama echoed themes that made him famous, lamenting "our broken and divided politics" and promising the possibility of "a new kind of politics," one that replaced ideology with common sense.

Opinion

GOP needs to step out of echo chamber

If the Republican Party is to rebuild, it's going to have to drag its core supporters kicking and screaming out of the echo chamber. Movement partisans - members of the apocryphal and ever shrinking "base" - increasingly are too often not involved in politics to support a particular set of convictions.

But of all the changes President-elect Obama will engender there is surely one AU students are looking most forward too .
