Adam L’Episcopo will get to graduate this spring, but soon thereafter he may be headed to Iraq — again. L’Episcopo is a senior in the School of International Service and he has a remarkable story. He served four years in the Army, including 18 months in Iraq.

Common ground tough to find in a polarized America

Since last year’s election season, partisanship has become our new national pastime. While not every member of the electorate officially belongs to a party, nearly every voter casts their support to either the Republicans or the Democrats, breeding the rivalry that plagues today’s political atmosphere and eliminating possibilities for common ground.

Right-wing extremists taint Tea Party protests, hurt conservative cause

Until this weekend, I gave the Tea Partiers the benefit of the doubt. On principle, I support protests. I think they’re good for democracy. Besides, I didn’t want to believe these anti-tax, anti-Obama demonstrators were the rabid, right-wing radicals Rachel Maddow, Keith Olbermann and other liberals made them out to be.

Where’s the line between a hook-up and sexual assault? The recent Eagle column, “’Sex’-perimentation defines Welcome Week,” indicated no such boundary exists. The line, however, is clear and we want you to know what sexual assault is and what to do if someone is sexually assaulted. The authors made the boundary between hook-up and assault blurry. It’s actually simple.

AU vet wins battle to graduate

Adam L’Episcopo wrote his admissions essay from inside an armored combat vehicle in Baghdad. On patrol in the middle of the night, he bent over the page with a flashlight and wrote about why he wanted to come to AU.

Students join tax protest

Conservative AU students marched on the Capitol Building Sept. 12, along with tens of thousands of other protestors demanding that President Barack Obama curb spending, withdraw support for liberal health care reform and other measures seen as unconstitutional. The protesters, a loose coalition of fiscal, moral and foreign policy conservatives animatedly cheered along with speakers denouncing Obama’s “socialist” agenda. When former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, R-Texas, spoke to the crowd, they chanted “freedom works.” Armey is now the leader of the conservative group Freedomworks, a main sponsor of the march. The crowd ranged in age from young children riding in strollers — some with signs propped against their little hands — to senior citizens in wheelchairs. One young child held a sign that read “We [the children] can’t afford your health care.”

Administration warns of H1N1

After some students reported cases of H1N1 flu in AU dorms, the university is preparing for the worst, as health officials expect the frequency of swine flu cases to increase significantly this fall, AU President Neil Kerwin said in a memo.

AU professors get NIH grant

Two AU psychology professors earned a five-year grant of $300,000 per year from the National Institutes of Health to continue work on reducing drug addiction.

An unknown male intruder entered a Georgetown University student’s apartment Sept. 1, in what is now the ninth or possibly tenth case of sexual assault in the Georgetown University area in the past year and a half.
