Five novel ideas for considering the ins, outs of pop culture

I’m pretty much convinced it’s the pop culture apocalypse. They’re making a 3D “Great Gatsby.” Mathew Weiner is fighting to keep advertising out of “Mad Men,” a show that is about advertising. Sidney Lumet died, and “The Dark Knight” sequel will be filmed in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh! These are the end times. Which is nice, because it perfectly coincides with the end of my column and the end of three years of writing about pop-culture for The Eagle. It’s nice to go out at the end.

Actress Ashley Judd discusses book about humanitarian work

Ashley Judd has long been known for her varied film career, with movies like “Double Jeopardy,” “De-Lovely” and “Where the Heart Is.” But now, the Harvard grad and Golden-Globe nominated actress is taking on another role: activist. On Monday, April 11 she made an appearance at the Sixth & I Historic Synagogue to discuss her new book “All That is Bitter and Sweet,” and to talk about her humanitarian work.

National Theatre performs 'The Color Purple'

Audience members could not contain themselves at the National Theatre production of Alice Walker’s novel “The Color Purple.” The house was filled with laughter and tears as the trials of Celie, an oppressed African American woman in the early 19th century, were spelled out through song and dance.

Senior theater majors produce Metro-themed play

Armed with voice recorders and SmarTrips, the 2011 senior class of theater majors ventured through the D.C. Metro system and collected over 100 interviews. In teams of two, one person would ask questions about life, happiness and the Metro. The other would take notes on the mannerisms and physicality of their subject. The class then transformed what they found into a live docudrama with over 60 characters played by 12 performers.

Abroad student offers retrospective on her tasty Roman holiday

I love food. I dream about it, enjoy cooking it and, of course, love eating it. I also love to write, so I count myself very lucky that I’ve been given the opportunity to merge the two passions by working for The Eagle. I’ve loved writing about my culinary adventures while in Rome, but what I love more is how those culinary adventures will always remind me of my favorite memories of my semester in Italy.

AU announces 2011 commencement speakers

Bob Schieffer, Sen. Richard Lugar, Vera C. Rubin, Aaron S. Williams, Gene Sperling and Stephen N. Zack will be AU's commencement speakers this year. AU announced today that Schieffer would speak at the School of Communication's graduation ceremony, Lugar for the School of Public Affairs, Rubin for the College of Arts and Sciences, Williams for the School of International Service, Sperling for the Kogod School of Business and Zack for the Washington College of Law.
