Professor discusses Mars and Bush's space program

President George W. Bush announced a plan to land Americans on the moon by 2020 on Jan. 14, and while this year's election may affect that proposal, AU physics professor Richard Berendzen, whose areas of expertise include astronomy and NASA, has no doubt that travel to Mars and the moon will become reality relatively soon.

Prof. Alan Mandel: A career of grand scales and small notes

Throughout the world, critics and viewers have used these words to describe Alan Mandel's piano-playing style: "spellbinding," "intoxicating," "torrential," "transcendent" and "powerful." He has performed for audiences in 51 countries in Europe, Asia, the former Soviet Union, Africa and throughout the United States. He has packed audiences into Carnegie Hall in New York, composed over 100 songs, recorded over 30 albums and played hundreds of concerts from memory. Mandel, professor emeritus of music at AU, has been all around the world.

Film review: "Miracle"

At the close of the 1970s, the Cold War raged as the USSR reached the pinnacle of its military power, while half a world away, young American teenagers discovered the joys of Atari. The threat of Soviet domination became increasingly present and the United States searched frantically for some bragging rights in the form of, well, a miracle. What can they turn to for such a hope? After they tried acid-washed jeans, hockey came in at a close second.

'State of U.' on ATV pokes fun at SC and GA

Student Confederation President Nick Terzulli announced at a student government meeting Tuesday night that he would not seek a second term. This became very clear as Terzulli set up his "State of the University" speech taped for ATV, the campus television station, Wednesday night.

SC president suspends constitution to appoint vice president Tuesday night

Student Confederation President Nick Terzulli declared a "state of emergency" for the SC on Tuesday to suspend the SC Constitution in order to appoint Kyle Taylor to the position of vice president - an action otherwise unconstitutional. Following the SC Bylaws, the General Assembly, AU's student legislature, approved the declaration at a meeting Tuesday night and gave Terzulli the power to appoint Taylor.

Dept. of Performing Arts infuses 'Much Ado' with hip-hop

AU's Department of Performing Arts will open their 2004 season with a writer that commands respect, a show that is sure to intrigue spectators and two concepts that are universal: comedy and romance. Professor Caleen Sinnette Jennings - director of the show and of the AU theatre and music theatre programs - adapted it to another of today's universal phenomena: hip-hop culture.

Unicorns make mythic musical magic

There's something to be said about the feeling of childish delight, be it from a fresh new pair of kicks, chicken fingers in TDR or a first date. To be so excited about something that it puts a giddy little kick in a step is a rare treat. The most recent reason to feel this excited is British Columbian band the Unicorns, whose Alien8 album "Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?" provides the fine head-nodding, foot-tapping, prance-around-the dorm pop style.

Breaking News: Smoke, no damage in Hurst

D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to a fire alarm in Hurst Hall around 4 p.m. Monday afternoon. The alarm, caused by a sterilizer in a lab, caused no substantial damage, according to Public Safety. "A smoke detector activated on the first floor, causing us to believe that there was smoke," said Gary Folckemer, coordinator for Public Safety Administration.

AU plans switch to cellular in dorms

AU will use student cell phones as the primary phone service in the residence halls by September 2005 in order to save the University money, according to Carl Whitman, executive director of e-operations. "I want 100 percent of residence hall users to go to cell phones," Whitman told The Washington Post.

Patriots repeat in Super Bowl

Lightning apparently can strike twice in football. For the second time in three years, New England Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri kicked a game-winning field goal to lead his team to a Super Bowl victory. Vinatieri's 41-yard kick, with seconds left in the game, gave New England the victory by the score of 32-29.

Campus construction continues

As snow and ice covers most of the campus, construction crews are still working to improve the overall look and facilities of AU. Currently, there are several projects in development, as well a few in the midst of heavy construction. Here are a few of the structural improvements coming to AU.
