Pipes protests speech protest

Daniel Pipes, a controversial authority on the Middle East, claims a staff member of the American Civil Liberties Union protested his speech at AU in January. Pipes posted on his Web site that ACLU National Field Organizer Matt Bowles went to the speech and sponsored a protest against him.

Film: 'The Whole Ten Yards'

Here is one piece of advice for all filmmakers contemplating making a sequel: If the original movie relied on the characters more than the plot, the sequel will inevitably cave. This proves to be the main problem with "The Whole Ten Yards," starring Matthew Perry and Bruce Willis.

Music: Marwood carves out a niche

Tucked away behind the bar at 9th Street Espresso on Manhattan's lower East Side, you will find Rob Overby: dispenser of coffee, admitted Britney and Christina fan and the lead guitarist for underground New York-based band Marwood. While you are most assuredly familiar with coffee, Britney and Christina, Marwood may be unfamiliar territory.

AU earns new high rankings

AU's School of Public Affairs was ranked No. 10 overall in the nation, while the Washington College of Law was ranked second in clinical training and sixth in international law, according to the U.S. News and World Report new rankings.

Liz Phair tip-toes around indie rock

Rocker Liz Phair played a sold-out show at the 9:30 club Sunday night to close her recent tour. Phair and her openers, Wheat and Rachael Yamagata, brought in mostly 20-to-30-somethings, but also several teenage girls itching to hear Phair's single "Why Can't I," which has been a mainstay on top-40 radio since last year.

Kidman bares teeth in 'Dogville'

The first adjective that could begin to describe Lars von Trier's new film "Dogville" is "striking." The instance is the opening scene, which is a downward shot on a soundstage with chalked outlines of houses with labels and minimal props, perhaps a desk or a wall.

D.C. Council is looking for a way to make schools safer in the wake of the shooting at Ballou Senior High School on Feb. 3. A bill debated during an open D.C. Council hearing last Monday would create a Metropolitan Police Department School Safety office and would shift the responsibility of school safety to the chief of police.

Film: 'The Alamo'

"The Alamo" tells the story of the 13-day siege of the former mission in San Antonio in 1836, right in the midst of the Texas Revolution. The film has excellent performances by Dennis Quaid, Billy Bob Thornton and Jason Patric as well as newcomer Patrick Wilson, but lacks the accuracy necessary for a historical film.

Film: 'Johnson Family Vacation'

There are two kinds of bad movies. The bad movies that you can laugh at their ridiculousness (flicks like "Gigli," "Bones" and anything starring Ice-T), and the bad movies that are so awful, you can't even make fun of them. "Johnson Family Vacation" falls in the latter category.

Lacrosse gets defensive in 6-3 win

The AU Women's Lacrosse team beat the Villanova Wildcats, 6-3, in a defensive battle Saturday afternoon at Villanova. Junior attacker Rebecca Copeland scored three goals for AU, matching the entire Wildcat output, to lead the Eagles to their fifth victory in their last seven contests.
