Opinion: Take money from Ladner rather than axing teams

·

It is with disappointment that I write this letter regarding AU's decision to cut three of its current sports programs - Men's and Women's Tennis and Men's Golf. According to Athletic Director Joni Comstock on AU Athletics' Web site, the program cuts are being made to "target our efforts into sports that will further augment our athletics profile, and will build support from our former student-athletes and friends.

Take the juice out of sports

A recent story about steroids has brought a great deal of scrutiny to the game of baseball by questioning the use by players over the past two decades. For those of you who don't religiously watch "SportsCenter" in the morning, Jose Conseco, a former MLB Most Valuable Player, has published a book in which he exposes the rampant use of steroids by himself and former teammates.

Eastwood's 'Baby' sweeps Oscars; Rock rolls as host

For the 77th Oscar broadcast, things were looking bad when the ceremony ended its opening clip reel with the cinematic blasphemy of a digitally inserted Shrek walking alongside Charlie Chaplin. However, the show moved at a brisk pace and proved to be highly entertaining as "Million Dollar Baby" won four of its six nominations: Best Picture, Best Director for Clint Eastwood, Best Actress for Hilary Swank and Best Supporting Actor for Morgan Freeman.

Opinion: Poor Eagle's Nest quality is AU's fault

Hi. My name is Kevin Wunder. You may know me as the guy who made you a kick-ass Subway sandwich that one time at the Eagle's Nest. More likely, you didn't pay much attention to who was making your sub because you were too busy watching the sandwich like a hawk, making sure I wouldn't grab one of those gross tomatoes, or use a dirty knife, or use bread that is crumbling and falling apart.

The lost art of making out

I knew I wasn't going to sleep with him. Why? Because I liked him. It was date three with my beer-chugging environmentalist and so far I was impressed. I had taken him bowling, he had taken me to dinner and while I was fantasizing about getting him naked, he also made me laugh.

Hunter S. Thompson's final chapter

If you understand the workings of a .45-caliber pistol, you realize there's something unmistakably American about it. A star-spangled blast in every bullet fired that's cheap enough to become almost democratic. While it's bathed in the glitz of Hollywood films, it's also available at every pawnshop in the ghettoes.

Boston's sad losers now sore winners

Growing up in a suburban town just outside Boston, I learned a religious level of admiration for the Red Sox. The flip side of this coin was obviously our never-ending hatred for the Yankees. Our acceptance of this was as natural as the leaves changing color in the fall.

Their words: James Gardner, SC President

In working with University administrators for three years as a member of the Student Advocacy Center, I have learned that they are not the stingy, heartless ogres that some candidates for student government try to portray them as. Labeling the administration an adversary seems like an excuse for having nothing substantial to say.

Their words: Kyle Taylor, SC President

My name is Kyle Taylor and I'm running for SC president. My time as Eagle Nights director and SC vice president has inspired me to pursue this position and given me the skills I need to reach out to you, the students, and program effectively to develop policies that are important to you.

Singles in a hurry make choices on looks, not love

Mitsubishi Motors released a commercial in 2000 for its Eclipse that asked viewers: "Have you ever looked at someone and said, 'Check her out, she looks loyal?' Or, 'Whoa, look at the morals on that guy?'" After a pause, the commercial provided the answer most audience members were thinking: "No.
