Letts RHA treats kids to Halloween

Despite a major transportation mishap, about 20 children from the D.C. metro area came to AU to celebrate Halloween with Letts Hall resident assistants and student volunteers. The three-hour event was held in the Letts Game and Recreation Center and nine different lounges throughout the building.

Staff editorial: No security threats on campus network

The Federal Government is requiring all Internet service providers and institutions that provide Internet access to upgrade their technology to broadband that can be monitored for security reasons. AU would have to spend an estimated $3 million on the federally mandated upgrades since it provides Internet access to students, faculty and staff.

In its Oct. 24 issue, The Eagle reported that "On a Sensual Note" performed a concert in Kay this past weekend. AU's entire a cappella community came together on Sunday in Kay, in a performance that included three different groups, Dime a Dozen, On a Sensual Note and Treble in Paradise.

AU: No need to restrict military recruitment

Not one to follow issues of the Graduate Leadership Council very closely, I was surprised to see that legislation had been passed on Wednesday, Oct. 5, which would effectively ban military recruiters from the AU campus, based on the "discriminatory" policies of the US military toward those who are openly gay.

He said... A There are two sides of rock 'n' roll: fiery power and cool swagger. At the Black Cat on Saturday, two lesser-known New York bands personified these elements. Opener We Are Scientists ignited the audience and headliner Ambulance LTD made everything chill.

'Rocky Horror Picture Show' does the Time Warp again

It's that time of year again, so break out the fishnets, add some more eye shadow, grab some high heels and get ready to take that jump to the left! "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is coming to Ward 1 Saturday and Sunday night. Androids Fighting Productions has been working harder than ever to make sure the sophomore performance of "Rocky Horror" is every bit as outrageous as the first.

Pests seen crawling campus, dorms

Students at American University have reported seeing rats, cockroaches or other vermin around campus, but are divided on whether the issue is a major problem facing AU. "Western Pest Services is on campus every Tuesday and Friday to perform routine inspections of common areas on campus both on the grounds and inside buildings," said Stephanie DeStefano, Grounds Operations coordinator for AU.

Field hockey players get PL, national honors AU field hockey freshman attacker Irene Schickhardt was named the Patriot League's Rookie of the Week for her play in last week's action. She netted a hat trick in AU's 3-2 overtime win at Holy Cross on Saturday.

NHL on OLN is no-see TV

This should have been a fantastic season for NHL fans. Sidney "The Next One" Crosby is skating alongside the legendary Mario Lemieux in Pittsburgh, while Jaromir Jagr has regained his scoring touch in New York (10 goals in 10 games). A crackdown on obstruction and a reduction in the size of goaltending equipment has improved the offensive flow of the game.

DJ Aphrodite makes listeners fall in love

When British-born DJ Aphrodite, the irrefutable "Drum 'n' Bass King," comes to D.C. on Friday for his CD release party, listeners can expect, in the words of the King himself, "good groves, lots of energy, and great bass lines." For the uninitiated, Aphrodite sums up drum 'n' bass as "the most energizing, upbeat genre of electronica.

SG lobbies Congress to protect higher education

Student Government President Kyle Taylor is encouraging students to send letters to their Congressmen and women to protest former President Benjamin Ladner's settlement package. Taylor sent out a letter urging Congress to take action to appropriately deal with issues concerning Ladner.

'Zorro' should not ride again

"The Legend of Zorro" is far worse than anyone could have ever, ever expected. After seeing it, viewers will wish longingly for the two hours and ten minutes of wasted life back. "Legend" stars Antonio Banderas as Don Alejandro de la Vega by day, Zorro by night.

Volleyball aces Howard in home win

If the Howard Lady Bison see AU volleyball players serving in their nightmares for the next couple days, you can't blame them. On Tuesday night at Bender Arena, the Eagles had 19 aces, eight alone by junior Elizabeth Maloney, as the Eagles cruised past Howard, 3-0 (30-18, 30-10, 30-13).

The U.S. Senate is requesting all documents related to the investigation into former President Benjamin Ladner's expenses, as well as information about the $3.75 million severance package the board awarded Ladner following his resignation.

Gore Verbinski continues to amaze, consistantly bringing his A-game to the director's chair. This outing he brings neither pirates nor intelligent mice, but a story about life. The life in particular is that of a weatherman who must learn that, like the weather, life is not always predictable or pleasant.

JORDAN BEANE Right now there are six college football teams in the top 25. Six. Surely not all of them will make it through the season with an unblemished record, but I'm certainly pulling for it. Anything to mess with the creators of the Bowl Championship Series is fine by me.

Universities nationwide face presidential scandals

Following the removal of Benjamin Ladner as AU's president, students, faculty and administrators have been wrapped up in news reports and student protests, but AU isn't the only school that's faced a change in leadership after a presidential scandal in recent years.
