The AU men's basketball team started off the season with dreams of a conference championship, but fell into a month-long slump over winter break. The Eagles lost six of eight games, including their first two Patriot League matchups. However, they have a chance to establish themselves as a contender on Saturday when they will host the PL-leading Holy Cross Crusaders.

Classes may have started up again, but Jack Bauer has returned from a Chinese prison with a taste for blood, VH1 is continuing to put on innovative reality trash ("The White Rapper Show" is a work of genius) and its only 28 days until pitchers and catchers report, so it's not all bad.

I'll be honest; this is probably the most self-indulgent column I've written yet. Nobody cares about hockey, and I'm fine with that, because I still do. This column isn't even funny like I usually try to make it, but you might end up laughing at how ridiculous the New York Islanders are. They have gone from a dynasty to a joke, and I guess I just want everyone to understand our pain.

Richmond freshman Brian Morris scored 15 points, including two three-pointers in the final four minutes, to lead the Spiders to a 61-50 come-from-behind victory over AU on Friday night in Richmond.

I'm pulling double duty this week, covering both the men's basketball victory over Morgan State and writing this column. Oh wait, I pretty much do that all the time because we don't have that many writers. Do me a favor and come write for the sports section, sometimes there are cookies.

Andre Ingram led the Eagles with 19 points, including a clutch four point play in overtime, in a wild 59-54 win in double overtime on Friday night against Fairfield.

After a disappointing 2005-'06 season that started out with a six-game losing streak and ended with a 14 point loss to Bucknell in the second round of the Patriot League Tournament, the AU men's basketball team hope that their status as one of the most experienced teams in the PL will make them serious contenders for the league title.

After the success that was last week's MLB awards column (and since nobody sent in any questions to answer and I didn't feel like making any up this week), I had to decide between two possible topics: NFL Midseason Awards or NBA Season Preview. Although making fun of Brett Favre never gets old (can't say the same thing about Brett), anticipation over the return of Hubie Brown to our televisions made this one an easy decision.

In their last regular season game, the senior players on the AU field hockey team made sure that they'll play at home at least one more time. Seniors Camila Infante, Tiffany Carter and Kaitlin DeTroia provided all of the offense for the Eagles in their 4-1 victory over Holy Cross to clinch the Patriot League Regular Season Championship.

The dorms shut off air conditioning and two teams from the Midwest are playing a World Series that nobody cares about, so it's about time baseball season ended. Here are the Eagle Awards for the 2006 season.
(10/23/06 4:00am)
The No. 19 AU field hockey team (11-6, 4-0 PL) continued its up-and-down season this weekend, winning a double-overtime thriller 6-5 over Lehigh on Saturday, but losing 1-0 at Princeton on Sunday.
