For the second time in four years, baseball played its biggest game. Not on the lush green grass of Fenway Park or Yankee Stadium, but in the cold, sterile chambers of the U.S. Capitol. With Commissioner Bud Selig and Major League Baseball Players Association leader Donald Fehr appearing before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the national pastime was found defending itself from the harsh stigma of a steroid scandal in the nation's capital.

Contrary to what many Americans may think, British pubs and American bars are very different. To the average American, it seems as though pubs and bars have the same function - places people go to drink and then stumble home. However, pubs in London are much more than just a place to go for Friday night's happy hour. You may be asking yourself how pubs have anything to do with sporting events, so let me explain.

Welcome to the first installment of "Across the Pond," where I will spend this semester looking at sports, London style. It seems that many things become lost in translation as one goes from American English to British English. For example, cookies are called biscuits, Three Musketeers bars are actually what we call Milky Ways and, something we are all familiar with, unlike Americans the English drive on the "wrong" side of the road. Even sports, something people consider to be universal, are different from U.S. sports.
