The AU Women's Basketball team had a lot to be thankful for this week, as it won all three games over Thanksgiving break to run its record to an impressive 4-1 in non-conference play. The Eagles defended their home court, beating Mount St. Mary's 67-52 Wednesday night and winning a 74-63 overtime thriller over Loyola College of Maryland before Sunday's 48-46 victory in Asheville, North Carolina against the University of North Carolina- Asheville. Senior guard Joanna Barnes led the Eagles on Tuesday night with 22 points, and 10 rebounds, shooting 8 of 16 from the field. Seniors Kim Salem and Chanel Hunt chipped in with 10 and 12 points, respectively while point guard Tala Hadavi scored 14 points while hitting 4 of 8 attempts from three point range. After trailing 34-30 at the half, head coach Melissa McFerrin motivated her squad to come out and pound MSMU in the second half, outscoring them 37-18 in the second half, including a 14-1 run to start the second half, capped off by Hadavi's three with just under 13 minutes left. The Eagles kept up their hot shooting against Loyola, staving off a post-Thanksgiving meltdown behind a balanced attack, again led by Barnes (16 points), Hadavi (14) and Hunt (10). Salem, senior Jenyce Woodruff, and freshman Natalie Walker chipped in with nine points apiece. The Eagles again started slow and entered the locker room trailing 36-32. The teams went back and forth all throughout the second half. A Hadavi three-pointer with a minute left gave the Eagles a two-point lead, but Loyola tied it with a Krystle Harrington jumper with 33 seconds left. Barnes' jumper missed with 5 seconds left. In overtime, the Eagles scored the last 11 points after Woodruff broke a 63-63 tie with a pair of free throws with 2:46 left. Back-to-back jumper by Hunt and Woodruff put the game out of reach and the Eagles hit their free throws down the stretch. Sunday's victory was a coming-out party for Hunt, who was playing in her native state. She scored a season-high 15 points to lead the Eagles over UNC-Asheville in a low scoring, 48-46 affair. AU led by 10 with four minutes left, but a furious Bulldog rally by almost resulted in an upset. Hadavi had another great game, scoring 13 points and dishing out 5 assists for AU. The Eagles now turn their attention to the Southern Mississippi Tournament on December 3rd. They open up against Austin Peay. A victory would land them in the championship game December 4th against the winner of Southern Miss and Columbia.

The AU Men's Basketball team suffered their second straight road defeat Saturday night, falling to Niagara, 78-71. The Eagles were led by center Matej Cresnik, who scored 17 points, and Raimondas Petrauskas, who netted 16 on 7 of 10 shooting. AU hung tough for awhile, trailing by only one point with seven minutes to go. However, a five-minute scoring drought killed their chances of coming back against their MAAC opponent. A surprisingly tough game was turned in by leading scorer Andre Ingram. Ingram, who scored 38 points in his homecoming against VCU Monday night, struggled from the field, shooting 4 of 13 and scoring only nine points. He also grabbed seven rebounds and handed out six assists. AU couldn't deal with the bulk of 6'8", 245 pound Niagara forward Juan Mendez, who scored 30 points and pulled down nine rebounds. David Brooks also scored 18 for the Purple Eagles. Niagara, coming off a five-point loss to nationally-ranked Providence, forced 14 turnovers and snagged seven steals to knock off AU, which had a hot shooting night, shooting 53% from the field. Senior point guard Ryan Graham scored 12 points for AU and played 31 minutes, substituting for starter Linas Lekavicius. Next up for AU is Tuesday's home opener against Wagner at 7 PM in Bender Arena.

Tennis drops two in Florida The Men's Tennis team will limp into this weekend's PL tournament as it wrapped up its regular season with back-to-back losses to the 49th-ranked Miami Hurricanes and Florida Atlantic University on Wednesday. Miami beat the Eagles, 5-2, with senior Guillaume Tarraulle and sophomore Sebastian Proisy registering the only wins for the Eagles. Tarraulle won No. 3 singles by beating Miami's John Hoyes, and Proisy defeated P.J. Passalacqua. The other four Eagles who competed in singles, Tushar Garg, Jonah Fliegelman, Juancarlo Vasquez and Ruben Rivero, all lost in straight sets. The Eagles were also swept in doubles, losing all three matches played. AU traveled north to Boca Raton, Fla. Wednesday, where it was rudely greeted with a 5-1 loss to the Florida Atlantic Owls. Tarraulle and Fliegelman fought hard in their singles matches, with each winning the first set. However, clearly feeling the effects of back-to-back games, they both faced fatigue and lost in the third set. Senior Andreas Kulcsar scored AU's only victory, beating Kevin Obletz in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Proisy and Fliegelman also won doubles, defeating Gianfranco Dossena and Mauricio Paiz, 8-4, but they were the only doubles team to win. The Eagles started out strong after losing the doubles point. Kulcsar fought hard and the Eagles tied the match at 1 with Kulcsar's victory. His win was the last of the day for the Eagles. Now, the Eagles must rebound quickly as they return home to defend their Patriot League crown this weekend. They will host the PL's best starting this Saturday at 9 a.m. With a win, the Eagles will enter their second straight NCAA Tournament.
