Let’s face it, sometimes D.C. can feel like a small town disguised as a big city. With the District spanning just shy of 70 square miles, it is easy to feel like you’ve experienced most of the nooks and crannies the capital has to offer. But all it takes is a venture outside of Tenleytown to find your scene. Here are the Scene staff’s top five scenes in and around D.C.

Members of the Wu-Tang Clan, one of the most historically influential crews in hip-hop history, came to LivingSocial’s 918 F St. to perform to a small die-hard audience on Sept. 28.

With a reputation as the biggest and baddest rap and hip-hop festival in the country, RFK Stadium is sure to be jam packed for the 10th Anniversary of Rock The Bells. The two-day festival hops over to D.C. on Sept. 28 and 29, and it’s going to be a weekend to remember.

After a summer of long-anticipated album releases and even some surprise ones (“Magna Carta Holy Grail,” anyone?), artists from all genres have begun putting out albums early in the fall to help transition into cooler weather. After all, autumn is a time for change, whether it’s a moodier sound or a more mature image. Check out the albums below, and maybe you’ll make a change to your playlists as well.

As an avid thrifter and former writer of the “Secondhand Style” column for the Eagle, I like to think that I have a grasp on the thrift store “scene” in DC. I’ve come to discover that many of the secondhand stores in DC are consignment shops (for those who don’t know, this is when you sell clothing back to a store in return for a fraction of your money back) as opposed to true thrift stores. Because of this, the prices of the clothing and accessories may cost more than at a thrift store, but don’t let this discourage you. Here is a small selection of some of my personal favorite secondhand shops in and around DC; a few of them pulled from previous columns and some of them brand new!

There’s no denying it: once former Disney Channel star Miley Cyrus was filmed twerking at rapper Juicy J’s show earlier this year, the style of dance became a phenomenon. But twerking is not a new thing in the hip-hop community.
Just ask Travis Porter, who has been making self-described “gyrating music” for a few years now. The trio opened up for headliner Lupe Fiasco at the SUB Welcome Week concert on Aug. 24. After the show, the groups’ members— Ali, Strap and Quez— sat down with The Eagle to discuss their break into the music industry.

Hundreds of AU students lined up outside of the Mary Graydon Center on Nov. 18 to see hip-hop group Chiddy Bang and their special guest, Hoodie Allen. And while the show was entertaining and played to the interests of the crowd, technical and atmospheric issues jilted the vibes of the show.

This week is all about hip-hop and rap. And even though this week’s picks tend to be more mainstream than usual, what’s wrong with a little variety?

This week, I unfortunately did not find time to go to a secondhand store of any kind (besides ones that I have already written about for past columns, so that would be boring). However, I have an issue with the secondhand selection in the District, and I can’t think of a better place to voice my opinion than right here.

This week’s list is hip-hop centric — minus Matt & Kim — but that doesn’t mean it is without substance. Take a listen: you’ll never know if you’d like it until you give it a try!

It’s official: I have broken up with my favorite secondhand store. And no, it wasn’t mutual. I just can’t do the long distance.

This week, I was introduced to some catchy new releases. Whether you like all the songs or just one, my goal is just to give you something to jam to while walking to class, “studying” in the library or really just anywhere!

Hello, and welcome back to a second year of Secondhand Style! If you’re a new reader, I am a huge fan of secondhand shopping, whether it’s vintage, consignment or my personal favorite, thrift.

I pride myself on having an eclectic music taste. In this column, I will be (as the name implies) bringing my five favorite songs at the moment to the masses. Oftentimes these songs will be brand new or at least fairly recent, but I can’t guarantee that I won’t include fantastic throwbacks.
