As I stood lost in the pouring rain on the streets of Paris at 3 a.m., my French-speaking friend re-booked on a different flight and my phone minutes officially used up, I could not help but laugh. No, I hadn’t gone insane. However my?chronic lack of sleep?and airport diet of peanut M&Ms (hey, they have protein!) probably didn’t help either.

PARIS — Before I left for my semester abroad, I assumed that my academic life in Paris would not be nearly as rigorous as its American counterpart. I was not completely wrong, but I did fail to figure in one crucial variable: whatever the work was, it would have to be done in Paris.

This is not a column about my semester abroad at its end. I still have a month left in Paris, and plan on living it to its fullest. However, this past weekend I realized just how short that month was and how much time has passed since I went on my self-imposed European exile. My momentum has shifted. I have started to feel the gravity pull that is home slowing me down and drawing me back. I’ve finally realized that I am going home.

Though any sort of exploring I do in London usually ends up qualifying as an adventure (whether I planned it that way or not), my first real European adventure took place this past weekend when I headed north to Edinburgh, Scotland.

American culture is known worldwide, positive reputation or not, but the British could go head to head with the United States for most distinct cultural norms.

It’s a late night. It’s been a few hours since I looked at my phone, realized I had 10 minutes left to catch the last train home, shrugged, and put my phone back in my pocket. As I finish my last pint, say my goodbyes, search my pockets for my coat check ticket stub, and step outside into the cold, I realize that too long have taxis forced their wares upon my unwilling wallet. I long to free myself from the imperialist oppression of fare meters and deviously long routes home. In short, I spent all of my cab money on beer.

LONDON — When considering the world at large, certain places definitely have a more “intense” reputation than others. Populations in some Third World countries struggle on a daily basis just to find clean water and accessible food. In other areas, there are extreme language barriers for native English speakers.

If you are anywhere near Germany for the last three weekends of September, it is this author’s sincere recommendation that you go to Oktoberfest. For those of you who do not know, Oktoberfest is the world’s largest beer festival. According to materials from the travel company Bus2Alps, over the three weekends of the festival, six million people from all over the world will eat 18 million chickens and drink 8 million liters of some of the world’s best beer. Do I really need to do any more convincing?

Writing my third “abroad” column while still at home in Connecticut proved to be a real challenge.

I like to think that spending some time away from my beloved university has given me some perspective on its goings-on. Then I begin to realize that I am across the Atlantic. Why should I know or care about things going on back at AU? I am thoroughly over-connected.

The word “freshman” has much more emotional weight than its definition would suggest. Often associated with angst, new beginnings and even bullying, everyone has distinct memories conjured up by that year (whether they like those memories or not).

“If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.”

LONDON — The phrase “four-letter word” should be pretty basic: a word with four letters. However, most often we associate the phrase with words lacking positive connotations. Well, here is another four-letter word — not usually on that understood list — but one which I can confidently say I would be happy to never hear or speak of again: V-I-S-A.

With all the sunshine expected this weekend, your skin will definitely thank you for a little indoor time (check out some of the past health columns if you don’t believe it). Outdoors, the National Mall will have plenty of activities this weekend from free yoga to the fan favorite Cherry Blossoms. If you are headed downtown, however, be sure to hide from the sun a bit and leave some time to stop at the National Gallery of Art.

We’re going to let you in on a little secret. Prepare to be shocked. You actually might want to sit down (if you aren’t already) before you read this. Just remember, we warned you. There are other things to do in the spring in Washington, D.C. besides going to the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

Many people are feeling a little lost about what movie constitutes a “must see” after all the Oscar anticipation and excitement. They are ready to take a break from heavier films but don’t exactly want to see the latest romantic comedy. The Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital provides the perfect medium of thought-provoking, inspiring and motivating films.
