LGBTQ+ athletes, past and present, have had to hide their sexualities due to the stigma they may face both inside and outside of the locker room. Being a non-heterosexual athlete comes with several obstacles, including harassment and discrimination from teams and fans, being labeled as distractions and feeling like a distinct minority among teammates.

AU men’s soccer tied Lafayette on Saturday 1-1 after weather conditions forced the game to be moved to George Washington University’s Mount Vernon Campus. AU (4-7-5, 3-2-3 PL) played a hard-fought game on the wet turf and battled until the final seconds of double overtime.

Basketball activities resumed at AU as the athletic department hosted its seventh annual Chalk Talk Saturday afternoon in Bender Arena. Full of friendly competition, players from the men’s and women’s teams were divided into four small teams to compete in skill-based events. The Chalk Talk concluded with a Q&A with head coaches Mike Brennan and Megan Gebbia.

Bucknell had been leading since the end of the first half. With mere minutes left of game time, Eagles fans began to zip up their bags, collect their belongings and make plans for the rest of the afternoon, walking away from an expected loss. But for sophomore forward Jerry Zouantcha, it wasn’t over. After a few dribbles, he shot and scored, tying the game.

American University’s women’s soccer team beat Lafayette College Sunday afternoon at Reeves Field in their last home game of the regular season. The Eagles (7-5-4, 2-4-2 PL) were able to break through with two second-half goals for the 2-0 win.

American University’s women’s soccer team dropped their fourth straight Patriot League game to Lehigh on Oct. 6 at Reeves Field. The Mountain Hawks won 1-0. The lone goal came 30 minutes into the game when Lehigh’s Sabrina Mertz found the back of the net off a free kick from 25 yards out.

In the old Pokemon series, there was a move called Rage. The general objective of the move was to build up as much energy as possible before the enemy Pokemon could defeat you. It started off semi-powerful, grew to be extremely powerful and, if your Pokemon had not been defeated, would proceed to cause atom-splitting, team energizing, 3-1 lead momentum shifting damage. Your Pokemon would win the match.

Junior Kristen Largay, the defending Patriot League Libero of the Year, has passed expectations, set new records and killed the competition. Largay has collected countless accolades in her nine-year volleyball career, from captaining her high school volleyball team to making her mark in conference history.

AU volleyball defeated the Colgate University Raiders on Sunday. AU (11-9, 6-0 PL) last met with Colgate in November 2017, and the Eagles dominated a three-set game, closing out the Raiders 3-0.

The AU women’s volleyball team beat Navy on Sunday in a five-set match in Bender Arena. The game was an intense back and forth battle as the two teams met again for the first time since last year’s Patriot League championship, when AU beat Navy to take the conference title.

The AU women’s soccer team began Patriot League play with a double-overtime draw against the Boston University Terriers Sunday at Reeves Field. The Eagles entered the game with a 5-1-2 record, and with this tie, they remain unbeaten at home.

The Boston University Terriers defeated AU field hockey 2-1 in overtime Saturday on District Day at Jacobs Field, continuing a recent losing streak that brought the Eagles’ overall record to 3-4.

In response to several racist and divisive incidents at AU, including the posting of anti-immigrant and anti-Semitic fliers on campus last winter, the American University Athletics Department will host its inaugural “Unity In Our Community” event in February in conjunction with the men’s basketball team’s game against Holy Cross.

AU’s fall sports teams have been ready to roll since early August. The field hockey team hosted a scrimmage against the University of Virginia on the newly-renovated Jacobs Complex and both men’s and women’s soccer played exhibitions on Reeves Field. The volleyball team will start their season a smidge later on Aug. 24 for their first home game against George Mason.
