On New Year's Eve 2013, Huan Hua Kuang and her two children, Sofia, 6, and Anthony, 5, were struck by a car while walking home from a family dinner party. Ms. Kuang and her son sustained several bone fractures, but Sofia suffered an even more unfortunate fate. She was killed in the collision with an off-duty Uber driver. Sofia’s seventh birthday would have been the following week.

AU hosted a town hall on Monday night to discuss the proposed AU student Metro pass program, and the event was led by AU Executive Director of Risk, Safety and Transportation Daniel Nichols, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority directors Tracey Foster and Jawauna Greene, AU student and Deputy Director of Public Communications Kris Schneider and Metro Transit Police Deputy Chief Kevin Gaddis.

AU’s third annual TEDx event took place on Feb. 27 at the Katzen Arts Center, showcasing the ideas of eleven speakers on topics including gender equality, identity issues, hunger and poverty, and health and wellness.

The AU College Democrats, AU Students for Bernie and AU Students for Hillary hosted a town hall debate on Feb. 23 in an effort to identify the most important issues for students in the 2016 election. The debate also addressed how the similarities and difference between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders’ platforms.

After the first month of conference play, the AU men’s basketball team could not have looked any worse. The Eagles went 0-6 with an average margin of defeat of 15 points. However, this young team has come together over the past week and a half, putting together four straight wins. After three straight road wins against Lafayette, Navy and Colgate, the Eagles returned home and defeated Holy Cross 58-45 on Monday night. After sitting in dead last in the conference for more than a month, the Eagles have now climbed up to seventh place and are just two games out of third place. So what has been the reason for this turnaround? Here are some of the biggest reasons AU has been able to salvage their season and push themselves into Patriot League contention.

Fueled by a half time talk from head coach Todd West, AU pulled past Bucknell University on Saturday afternoon, scoring three goals in twelve minutes to earn another conference victory. The Eagles started slow, showing signs of the offensively stymied team who has scored only two goals in the last three games.

Sexual assault is one of the most pressing issues facing colleges and universities across the nation, including AU. Leaked emails from the disbanded fraternity Epsilon Iota showed AU students openly discussing raping other students in April 2014. In March, the Department of Education opened an investigation into whether the University is compliant with Title IX in how it responds to sexual violence.
