After winning its second Patriot League title in history, the Field Hockey team now knows who and where it will be playing in the first round of the NCAA tournament this weekend. And it won't have to travel very far. The No. 7 ranked Eagles will face Iowa Saturday in a first-round clash in College Park, Md.
Sports columnist Elliot Smilowitz urges observes some consequences for Philly's decision to field controversial football player Terrell Owens.
It was a moment that will linger in AU Basketball lore for a long time. With 3.9 seconds to go and the game tied at 57, Lehigh's Jose Olivero drove the lane and knocked down a jumper to seal his team's 59-57 win. For the third year in a row, the Eagles' season ended with heartbreak in the Patriot League championship game.
This weekend, the AU Men's Soccer team will host Patriot League postseason action for the first time in school history. The Eagles assured one more homestand this season by dismissing Lafayette, 3-2, in an overtime thriller Saturday to win their first PL season title.
The AU Women's Field Hockey team won its second consecutive Patriot League title Sunday, defeating Colgate, 3-0. The win guarantees the Eagles a spot in the NCAA tournament, which begins next weekend. Sophomores Camila Infante and Heidi Hershberger each netted a goal for the Eagles, and senior Javiera Villagra put the nail in the coffin with a goal at the 64:28 mark. Sophomore Allison Fayfich stood strong in goal for the Eagles, making saves on all three shots she faced.
The AU Women's Soccer team suffered a season-ending defeat Friday night in the Patriot League tournament semifinals, losing, 3-1, to Lehigh in Hamilton, N.Y. The Eagles needed to win the PL tournament to secure a berth in the NCAA tournament. AU won the tournament two years ago against Navy, and lost to Navy in the final at home last season.
The Eagles cruelly smashed any grand schemes Bucknell or Colgate had of ending the AU Volleyball team's perfect run toward its fourth straight Patriot League title after another AU-dominant weekend in Bender Arena. On Friday night, the Eagles put forth a balanced attack, led by senior setter Courtney Mulford, and swept Bucknell in a little over an hour's time. Eighteen hours later, a similar scene was played out as the Eagles swept an undersized Colgate squad.
The AU Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams traveled to Bucknell this weekend to participate in the Sprint Invitational. In the men's 200-yard freestyle relay, the men's team, composed of Joe Coronato, Andy Brown, Stephen Brennan and Chris Leggett, finished in fifth place.
Be careful what you wish for. Bostonians spent almost nine decades longing to "Reverse the Curse." Now, as the Fenway faithful get over their World Series hangovers, they may have awoken a sleeping giant. Looking back on the 20th century and, more importantly, recent history, few regions have had better luck than the greater Massachusetts area.
While AU Men's Soccer teams from past years have accomplished such feats as qualifying for the NCAA tournament and even advancing to the round of 16 in 2002, this year's team did something Saturday night that none of those teams had: win a regular-season Patriot League title. The Eagles did so by wining, 3-2, at Lafayette in overtime, twice recovering from one-goal deficits before senior forward Sean Albright rocketed home the winner in the 100th minute - the final minute of the first of two possible overtime periods.
Ben Roethlisberger won his fifth consecutive start for the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday over a team that had been previously undefeated. Now, I'm not going to toot Ben's horn just because he plays for my hometown team, but I think it's a good idea to put the win in perspective and give him the credit he deserves.
After a regular season that saw it perfect in Patriot League play and ranked No. 7 in the country, the AU Women's Field Hockey team now turns its attention to the Patriot League tournament. The team enters this weekend's tournament with an overall record of 16-2-0 and a 5-0-0 record in PL play. It enters as the No. 1 seed and will play Lehigh in the opening game on Saturday. A win would guarantee the Eagles a spot in the championship game against the winner of Saturday's Holy Cross vs. Colgate match.
Shaq's in South Beach. KMart's a mile high (and so is Carmelo). Nash is in the Valley of the Sun, and 'Toine is in the ATL. This NBA season promises to be one of the most interesting, if not most competitive ever. Storylines are abundant on every team, from expansion to divorce to firesales. Superstars are unhappy, rookies are untested, and most of all, every team is undefeated (except the Rockets, Kings and Nuggets) as we begin play in 2004-2005.
With a chance to host the Patriot League tournament hinging on Saturday's match at Lafayette, the AU Men's Soccer team could've overlooked Wednesday's nonconference clash with visiting Pennsylvania. Perhaps that's what happened early. But trailing 1-0 at halftime, the once-groggy Eagles awoke, harased the Quakers throughout the rest of the match and won, 2-1, in overtime on senior forward David Marut's game-winning header.
Sports columnist Phil Turner discusses the decline of the NBA and basketball in the United States.

The AU Men's Cross Country team easily snagged its third straight Patriot League title Saturday at the PL championships in Lewisburg, Pa. Senior Pat McAdie seized the individual title by completing the 5-mile course in 25:37.00. But he was only a portion of the big story - one-quarter of it, to be exact.

In what has become a sort of regular ritual, the AU Men's Golf team traveled to North Carolina with high hopes and came back with disappointment.
