Home-court advantage gives club rugby teams the win

The women's and men's club rugby teams Saturday raked in their fifth and second respective wins of the season at their first "home" game of the season on the Massachusetts Avenue field. Although there were only a few fans when the whistle blew for the start of the women's game against George Washington, fans soon trickled in.

Women's soccer falls in semifinals

The women's soccer team lost Friday in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament to Navy 2-0, ending the season. Navy scored their first goal in the 24th minute on a counterattack. Midfielder Britney White sent a pass to senior forward Bridget Fox, the leading goal and points scorer in the Patriot League.

Volleyball secures home court for post-season

The volleyball team this weekend finished off the regular season, defeating Lehigh and Lafayette 3-0. Friday night, the Eagles defeated the Lehigh Mountain Hawks, capturing their seventh straight PL Regular Season Championship. The win secured home-court advantage throughout the post-season for AU.

Women's basketball beats Longwood in opener

For the second straight season, the women's basketball team started off on the right foot. The team Friday defeated the Longwood University Lancers 70-61 on the road in the season opener. After giving up the opening lay-up to Longwood's Amber Sims, the Eagles quickly took the lead and held it throughout the first half.

Opening win for men's basketball

For the second consecutive year, the men's basketball team opened Saturday its season with a win, defeating St. Francis University 75-68. The Eagles started the game strong, building a 19-point halftime lead over St. Francis. AU had a 42-23 lead due to their 60 percent shooting accuracy in the first half.

Two-time defending Patriot League champion Brendan Fennell and teammate Steve Hallinan qualified Saturday for the NCAA Cross Country Championships after placing in the top 10 of the Mid Atlantic Regional, leading the Eagles to a fourth-place overall finish in the race.

3-0 volleyball win over VCU for Senior Day

The volleyball team sent Tuesday night its seniors off with a bang, defeating Virginia Commonwealth 3-0 during the Eagle Senior Night game. The Eagles came out hard in game one, scoring the first three points. The VCU Rams applied steady pressure on the Eagles.

Several athletes gain PL awards

Eagle athletes brought this past week in several Patriot League awards. In men's soccer, senior goalie Chris Sedlak was named the Brine Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, his first weekly award. Sedlak's shutout on Senior Day Sunday helped the Eagles to a scoreless tie against Colgate.

Field hockey falls in double OT

Trying to reach the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight year, the field hockey team lost 3-2 in a double overtime play-in game to Ohio University. Winner of the Mid-American Conference, the No. 16 Ohio Bobcats opened the scoring in the third minute with a goal by sophomore Katelyn Shelley after securing a loose ball in front of the net.

Cross country's Fennell: Sport is 'about the people'

From the time he began running track in the eighth grade and then cross country his sophomore year of high school, AU senior Brendan Fennell's life has been all about improving his running. His dedication and determination to the sport is reflected in the numerous awards and recognitions he has received during his athletic career at AU.

Men's soccer gains double overtime 0-0 tie against Colgate

The men's soccer team battled a long, grueling home game Sunday against Patriot League opponent Colgate, taking the game into double overtime and ending without a single point on either side of the scoreboard. The 0-0 tie concluded the last regular season home game for the Eagles and also served as a recognition day for their two graduating players, senior goalkeeper Chris Sedlak and senior midfielder Jason Kuykendall.

Volleyball defeats Colgate 3-2

The volleyball team finished a successful weekend, defeating conference rival Colgate 3-2 Saturday after sweeping Bucknell Friday 3-0. The victory moves AU into first place in the Patriot League standings. AU is now one game ahead of the Colgate Raiders to get home court advantage for the Patriot League championship.

For the fifth straight season, the field hockey team was crowned the Patriot League champions Saturday afternoon after dominating Colgate 4-1 in the semifinals and Lafayette 3-1 in the finals. In the semifinals, the Eagles entered the field with high energy and intensity that did not let up until the final whistle blew.

On Senior Day, the women's soccer team fought to a 1-1 tie Saturday against the Bucknell University Bison. In a game that would decide the top spot in the Patriot League, both teams had numerous scoring chances, but neither could capitalize due to strong defenses on both sides of the field.

Eagle excellence

This week, many Eagles have received awards and recognitions in the Patriot League. In cross country, senior Brendan Fennell was named the East Coast Athletic Conference's Division I Athlete of the Week. Fennell won a PL Championship race last weekend, helping his team gain its sixth consecutive conference title.


MARATHON MADNESS - Samia Akbar, a 2003 graduate from the College of Arts and Sciences, is now a professional runner. Akbar is competing in the Olympic Trials in hopes of making the U.S. marathon team.

From the beginning, the Olympics have represented greatness. For some, going to the Olympics has been a life-long dream. For others, such as AU alumna Samia Akbar, competing in the Olympics did not appear on the horizon until much later in her athletic career.

"Are you ready for some football?" That line, immortalized by Hank Williams Jr. prior to all Monday Night Football games, provokes images of field goals, 300-pound linemen and scantily clad cheerleaders for many Americans. If that phrase were repeated across the pond here in London, fans would think of the fancy footwork and breathtaking goals that define the English version of soccer.

Men's cross country takes PL championship title

It was just a little bit of history repeating itself for the AU men's cross country team on Saturday, as the squad picked up its sixth consecutive league title at the Patriot League Championships held at Lafayette. The result was the closest in league history, with the Eagles topping Navy by a single point, 48 to 47.

Field hockey holds 5-0 conference record

The field hockey team traveled to Holy Cross Crusader turf to beat the Crusaders 4-0 on Saturday. The Eagles now enter the Patriot League tournament with a 13-4-0 overall record and an undefeated 5-0 record for conference games. The first half of play was slow, with only one goal scored.
