Crossing off the Crusaders:Women's basketball beats HC

Traveling all the way up to chilly Worcester, Mass., the women's basketball team won its first-ever match-up against Patriot League rival Holy Cross on Saturday night, clinching the win by double digits, 62-46. From the opening tip-off, the Eagles were in control of the tempo of the game.

Divide and conquer: Swimmers prove there can be an "I" in team

Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams could not pull through with team victories on Saturday at George Mason University. Although some individual successes did occur, it was not enough for either team to take home a win. The women battled it out against Army, George Mason and Old Dominion, and senior Meghan Thiel came through once again.

Phil Bender comes down to final shot

In a game that saw both teams matching shot for shot the entire contest with 16 lead changes, it was fitting that the outcome would come down to the final play. But for the nearly 4,000 fans packed into Bender Arena on Phil Bender, it was the Eagles that came up just short to the Holy Cross Crusaders, losing on an Andrew Beinert jump shot with 19 seconds remaining to give Holy Cross a 66-64 victory.

TRIPLE JUMP- Senior Travis Lay soars above two defenders as the Eagles seize a second straight Patriot League victory. AU is now tied with Bucknell University for second place in the league.

Men's basketball captures two wins

The men's basketball team rode a wave of hot shooting this past week en route to two victories over Patriot League foes, putting the team in a tie for second place in the conference. In their Patriot League home opener on Saturday, and first game since a seven-game road trip, the Eagles defeated the Raiders of Colgate University 65-57.

Bad 'Knight' for women's basketball

January 24

The Eagles had suffered a seven-game losing streak and were looking to earn a win as two of their key players, juniors Pam Stanfield and Talicia Jackson, returned to the court from injuries. "We've had a lot of things happening in the last six weeks," head coach Melissa McFerrin said.

Swimmers take final AU plunge

Both the men and women swim teams made a splash in their last home meet Friday. The men faced off against Georgetown while the woman competed against Georgetown and George Mason. Several swimmers came in first, while senior Meghan Theil earned the swimming equivalent of a hat trick.

Track team runs up record books

Three members of the men's and women's indoor track teams entered the school's all-time record books Saturday while competing at the University of Maryland Terrapin Invitational. Freshman Gena Turner, along with sophomores Dan King and Janis Irish, added their names to the top 10 list of fastest times in AU history in their respective events.

Women's b-ball suffers mid-season slump over break

Despite high hopes and a 6-4 record heading into winter break, the women's basketball team has suffered seven straight losses since Dec. 19. Though the majority of these games were close matches that ended in the final seconds of the game, the Eagles could not rally enough to finish off their opponents.

McCabe wins 1000-meter race at Navy Invitational The men's indoor track team competed at the Navy Invitational Saturday, finishing fourth in the four-team meet. The Eagles scored 45 points, while the event winning Navy scored 214. Fellow participants Virginia Commonwealth and the University of Pennsylvania were not far behind with scores of 162 and 127, respectively.

While some of us spent the last three weeks catching up on all of the Bravo TV shows we have missed out on at school (my favorite is clearly "Project Runway"), others were busy practicing and perfecting their athletic skills. The men and women of the various AU sports teams spent their days out on the playing fields, working hard to bring home wins so that non-athletes had something to brag about to their friends at those Big Ten schools like Michigan, Ohio State and Indiana.

Hardball in the House: Steroids and baseball

For the second time in four years, baseball played its biggest game. Not on the lush green grass of Fenway Park or Yankee Stadium, but in the cold, sterile chambers of the U.S. Capitol. With Commissioner Bud Selig and Major League Baseball Players Association leader Donald Fehr appearing before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the national pastime was found defending itself from the harsh stigma of a steroid scandal in the nation's capital.

Men's basketball goes road tripping

Last we saw of men's basketball, Brian Gilmore hit the clinching free throw in front of television cameras and an electric crowd at Bender Arena to seal a win over Jacksonville University. Since then, the Eagles have embarked on a school record seven-game road trip, including an historic win at College Park against the University of Maryland, AU's first against the Terrapins in 80 years.

In the past four months, I have been fortunate to attend many different football matches here in London. From a European Champions League to Premier League games, I was able to see a variety of high-quality football. However, this past weekend, I attended a football match of a very different kind.

Bench used to bring in win for women's basketball team

Players came off the bench Tuesday night to defeat the Monmouth University Hawks 67-51 when several players on the women's basketball team did not feel well. Since junior guards Pam Stanfield and Talicia Jackson played under the weather, players such as Sahar Nusseibeh, Liz Leer and Ashley Yencho, who don't normally start, came off the bench and came up big for the Eagles.

Milestone win for men's basketball

The 82-year-old men's basketball team Tuesday night reached an impressive milestone when it notched its 1,000th win after defeating local rival Howard University, 66-54. The Eagles were slow off the opening tip, allowing Howard to go on a 7-to-1 run in the first two minutes of the game.

Eagles pinned down by Hawks

The wrestling team Sunday night lost its home opening dual meet 27-15 to the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks in Bender Arena. The Eagles dropped the first three matches of the night. No. 14 ranked David Craig of Lehigh began the meet with a 15-0 technical fall in the 184-pound division, giving the Hawks an early 5-0 lead.

Volleyball season ends in first round of NCAA Tournament

The volleyball team lost on Friday night to Duke University in the first round of the NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament, bringing a long season of success to a close. Rubena Sukaj continued her outstanding play with her 11th double-double of the season, scoring 22 kills and digging a team-high 13 balls.
