Heavyweight wrestler Adam LoPiccolo avenged an earlier loss and won his match by pinning his ranked opponent as AU won all but one of its matches to beat Sacred Heart Sunday, 37-6 The sophomore, who was ranked 13th in his class by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, faced off against Payam Zarrinpour, who was ranked 11th among heavyweights.

Put-back gets women past 'Pards

It hasn't been at all pretty for the 2005-06 AU women's basketball team and Saturday was just that, but the Eagles posted a much-needed 75-74 victory over the Lafayette Leopards at Bender Arena. Freshman Sahar Nusseibeh led the Eagles with a career-high 22 points and 11 rebounds, including seven offensive.

Men's hoops rebounds against Leopards

The AU men's basketball team will take a win any way they can get it, but after a dominating 74-56 performance against Lafayette Saturday, winning big is always more fun. "That was great," junior Brayden Billbe said. "We really needed that." The Eagles (7-13, 3-4 Patriot League) saw various bright spots, including some assertiveness from freshman Brian Gilmore.

Hoops notes: Adams pumps up the family

Although AU coach Jeff Jones praised the Eagles for playing hard Wednesday at Navy, they blew a six-point halftime lead against a team they had not lost to since February 1991 by falling to the Midshipmen, 77-68. According Jones, the loss against Navy made Saturday's Lafayette game even more important.

Third season is the charm

With a 6-13 record and an offense that has struggled to consistently score points, the AU men's basketball team hasn't exactly had a successful first half of the season. But one of the major bright spots for the Eagles this season has been the improved play of junior guard Arvydas Eitutavicius, who has transformed from marginal role player to the second leading scorer on the team with 11.

In basketball there was Michael Jordan, football had Emmitt Smith, baseball had Frank Thomas, and hockey had Mario Lemieux. On Tuesday Mario Lemieux announced his retirement for the second and probably last time.

The AU women's basketball team suffered its third straight Patriot League defeat, losing, 80-70, to the Navy Midshipwomen Tuesday night at Annapolis, Md. The Eagles were led by senior Tala Hadavi, who scored a career-high 24 points, including shooting 5 of 10 from 3-point range.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The AU men's basketball team did something Wednesday it hadn't done in almost 20 years: lose at Navy. The theme of the 77-68 loss appeared to revolve around breaking streaks. Navy (7-11, 1-4 Patriot League) snapped its winless streak in league play.

Bryant's 81 speaks double truths

So last week got off to an inauspicious start as the Steelers upended the Broncos, but I'm back to try my luck again this week. Truth: Kobe Bryant will score 80 points again this season. Why not? The guy is out-of-this-world good, he's got no teammate who's worth anything, and he has no problem hoisting up 50 shots a game.

Track gets good mileage in Landover

AU mile runners dominated at the Maryland Invitational in Landover, Md., Saturday as senior Keira Carlstrom and junior Brendan Fennell won the women's and men's miles, respectively. Carlstrom had no trouble in the women's mile, breaking out into the lead early.

Women's basketball can't catch up with Crusaders The AU women's basketball team lost a heart breaker at Holy Cross Saturday, falling, 59-55, at the Hart Center to fall to 1-4 in the Patriot League and 4-14 overall. Senior Tala Hadavi led the Eagles with 18 points, while freshman Sahar Nusseibeh scored 13 and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Seniors push men to win

Seniors Kevin Falkenstein, Val Fomenko and Estebe Salgado gave the home crowd something to cheer about on Senior Day, leading the AU men's swimming and diving team to a convincing victory over Georgetown. The Eagles won all 11 swimming events Saturday afternoon at Frailey Pool.

Eagles top Army in extra, extra time

Maybe the AU men's basketball team believed a nine-game winning streak against Army dating back to when Kennedy roamed the West Wing and its 5-11 record were enough for a second straight Patriot League win. But instead it took two overtimes and two game-tying 3-point shots from junior guard Andre Ingram for AU to escape any talk of Army being due with a 65-63 win Wednesday at Bender Arena.

Women falter against Army

The AU women's basketball team continued a disappointing month by losing to the Army Black Knights Tuesday night at Bender Arena, 75-66, to drop to 4-13, 1-3 in the Patriot League. The Eagles used a strong first half to build a two-point halftime lead, but an 12-1 Army run to open the second half put the Eagles behind for good.
