Field hockey bounces back to capture Temple Invite title

Eagles defeat Michigan State, Rutgers to improve season record to 3-2 By PATRICK AMBROSIO Eagle Staff Writer The AU field hockey team rebounded from a rough first week and had a strong performance at last weekend's Temple Invitational, winning the title with a 6-1 victory over Michigan State and a 2-0 win over Rutgers.

Men's soccer shut out at Duke Classic

The AU men's soccer team traveled to Durham, N.C., this past week, hoping to build off of their success in the D.C. College Cup. However, the Eagles lost both games in the Duke/Adidas classic, evening their record on the season to 2-2. In the first game, the Eagles matched up against the host Duke Blue Devils, the eighth- ranked squad in the nation.

Duquesne, GMU no match for Eagles

The AU women's soccer team won the Georgetown Tournament this past weekend, defeating Duquesne 3-1 on Saturday and George Mason 2-1 the following day. The two wins improved the undefeated Eagles to 3-0 on the young season. After having their match postponed to Saturday due to rain, the Eagles and the Duquesne Dukes finally played in the opening game of the tournament.

Cross country teams sweep individuals

The AU men's and women's cross country teams opened their season last Friday with a strong showing at the Mt. St. Mary's Duals, where they captured all of the individual titles. The men's team finished 3-1 on the day, which was highlighted by senior Dan Beardslee's first-place individual finish in the 5k.

Women's soccer tops Mount St. Mary's The AU women's soccer team won its first match of the season on Saturday, beating Mount St. Mary's 5-0. Freshman Kelly McLaughlin scored the first goal 15 minutes into the game, giving the Eagles an early lead. The team's next four goals came in the second half.

'Blue Crew' silences 'Screaming Eagles' as student fan group

This weekend, the AU Athletics Department will announce the launch of a new student fan group called "The AU Blue Crew" in an effort to increase campus support of the university's athletic teams. The Blue Crew will host a three-on-three basketball tournament this Saturday in order to raise their profile and encourage students to join the group.

California dreams turn nightmarish for field hockey

Last season, the AU field hockey team had a great start to the season, winning 15 games in a row en route to a program best 20-2 record. However, the 2006 season started out with a rough California road trip, as the Eagles lost their first two games, each in overtime by a score of 4-3, before salvaging a 4-3 overtime victory over Stanford on Tuesday.

Comstock to leave AU to become NCAA senior vice president

Acting AU President Neil Kerwin announced this week that university Athletic Director Dr. Joni Comstock will be leaving to take a position with the NCAA. Comstock, who has been the athletic director at AU for the past three years, will begin working for the NCAA on Sept.

AU Athletics launches new Web site, team logos

The AU Athletics Department launched its new Web site on Tuesday, revamping the site's capabilities and formally introducing the school's new athletic logo. The new Web site, which features a sharper design and more interactive multimedia options than the old site, was designed in an effort to draw more attention to the university's sports teams and to allow students to actively get involved in AU's athletic scene.

Men's soccer captures D.C. College Cup

Off to their best start since the 2002 season, the AU Eagles men's soccer team captured their fourth D.C. College Cup title in the six-year history of the tournament this past weekend. Victories over Howard University on Friday, followed by one over rival Georgetown University on Sunday, gave the Eagles their first piece of silverware on the season.

Track shows improvement at Penn Relays

After running the slowest time ever by an AU team in the four-by-mile relay at last year's prestigious Penn Relays, Brian McCabe, Brendan Fennell, Conor Lanz and Steve Hallinan entered this year's competition looking for redemption. "We were really disappointed last year," said Lanz, a junior.

Crew team's fundraising raffle renames 'Ladner' boat

Back in the fall, President Benjamin Ladner was unceremoniously removed from office at AU after discrepancies in his contract's salary. Now it seems as if his name will also be removed from one of the AU Crew team's boats after a boat-renaming raffle held this week.

Lax defeated in PL semi-final

Despite a late-game comeback, the AU women's lacrosse team dropped their first-round Patriot League Tournament match to Colgate, 12-7, at Hart Turf Field in Worcester, Mass. Down by two with just under 13 minutes to play, the Eagles showed signs of revival with a goal by junior Sarah Milewski to pull AU within one.

Men's tennis falls to Army in PL tournament final, 4-2

History repeated itself on Sunday as the AU men's tennis team fell to Army in the finals of the Patriot League championship held in West Point, N.Y. The Eagles had just pulled off a dominating victory against Navy on Saturday, defeating them 4-0 in the semi-finals.
