Lacrosse dominates net in decisive win over Lafayette, 19-8

The AU women's lacrosse team defeated Lafayette 19-8 on Saturday, paced by senior Lauren Aksionoff's career-high six goals. With the win, the Eagles improve to 6-6 on the season and 2-1 in Patriot League play. "It was huge to have Lauren play a great game," Coach Katie Woods said.

Fennell, Lanz help track teams find success at Texas Relays

The distance medley team finished second while Conor Lanz placed ninth in the 1500 meters to cap AU's participation in the Texas Relays held in Austin, Texas this past weekend. The Eagle's elite men traveled south on Friday to compete against some of the top individual runners and relay teams in the country in preparation for the Patriot League championships at the beginning of May.

Three blind predictions: Pondering the 2007 MLB season

Yogi Berra once said, "In baseball, you don't know nothing." Truer words had never been uttered by the man who once said, "Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical." I mean honestly, do any of us really know anything about this game? If you were the one guy who on a drunken limb told your buddy that midseason rookie call-up Anibel Sanchez, who started the season in AA, would be the guy to break the longest no-hitter drought in Major League Baseball history, well, hell man, give me a call, we need to find some real estate! With that said, here are three predictions I am making for the 2007 season.

Lacrosse doomed by slow start, fall to UMBC, 15-9

The AU women's lacrosse team lost its second straight match Wednesday afternoon, falling to the UMBC Retrievers 15-9 in Baltimore, Md. The loss drops the Eagles below the .500 mark on the season at 5-6. The Eagles were down early, as two goals by Ali Levendusky sandwiched around a tally by Abbey Swift gave the Retrievers a quick 3-0 advantage only three minutes into the game.

Springtime AU spirit (without the sports)

Take a moment to look at Jacobs field and chances are, unless you happen to get there when women's lacrosse is practicing, or the track team is working on its stride, you probably won't see much action taking place. No, the deficit of teams using the field is not due in part to recent findings of radiation from WW1 weaponry testing; rather, it's due to our lack of funding from the athletic department.

Track teams finish strong at Maryland Invitational

The American University men's and women's track teams continued on with their winning ways this weekend as the Eagles traveled to Maryland on Saturday to compete in the Maryland Invitational. Not only was AU able to take home seven top ten finishes, but also two wins gained by the men's team.

G-town goes down in hyped matchup

All you needed to know about Georgetown last Saturday night is that at one bar, things got so crowded before the game that the owner volunteered to send people in line on a bus to see the game at his "other bar" in Columbia, Md. Other than that, everything pretty much went as expected: the big men (Hibbert, Noah, and Oden) dominated, and Florida and Ohio State both won.

The AU women's lacrosse team lost to Holy Cross at Worcester, Mass., on Saturday, 15-5, ending their four-game winning streak. The defeat drops the Eagles to 5-5 on the season and 1-1 in Patriot League play. The Crusaders jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.

Women's softball not afraid to play ball with the boys

Although there are championships held in every NCAA sanctioned sport, from field hockey to water polo, the Division I Men's Basketball tournament is the most famous and most prestigious. Ever since the first Final Four was held in 1939, players who have starred at the collegiate level have gone on to become some of the most famous players in the professional game.

Lacrosse drops Colgate in Patriot League opener

Marking its fourth consecutive win, the American University women's lacrosse team took its Patriot League opener at home on Saturday with a 15-10 victory over Colgate. The Eagles flew onto the field with a dominating presence in the opening minutes of the game, scoring the first two goals of the half with free position shots by senior Caithlin Gorman and junior Jackie Lane.

Eagle sports brief: Men's rugby competes in weekend tournament hosted by University of Pittsburgh

The AU men's rugby football club competed in the all-day tournament on Saturday, coming away with a win over Juniata in their first match, and two consecutive losses to Kenyon and Clarion. "This was spectacularly better than last season when we didn't win a single game," team vice president Sven Romberg said.
