Letter to the editor

Dear Editor, In the April 3, 2006 edition of The Eagle, your collective editorial maw misrepresented the joint Boisseau-Vidulich case against Ashley Mushnick. Simply, your assertion that the Board of Elections found against Mushnick for "exterior" shots of MGC is a complete fabrication.

Staff editorial: GW president resigns

George Washington University President Joel Trachtenberg announced his plans Tuesday to resign in July 2007. He has been president for nearly 20 years. ÿ His length of service is rare, with the average college president lasting only six years or so. Trachtenberg oversaw the building of GW Hospital and the acquisiton of more property for the school.

Conservatives: Bush one of us?

The Bush administration has been criticized by liberals for being, as New York Times columnist James Traub says, " the most extreme-the furthest from the center-of any governing majority in the nation's history." This characterization that President Bush is a conservative extremist is lost on paleoconservatives who question whether the President is conservative at all.

Reshaping the abortion debate

As an evangelical Democrat, I am perfectly aware of how for the past couple decades, the GOP successfully employed millions of evangelical voters as its foot soldiers by capturing the ultimate moral high ground, the sanctity of life. Some Democrats have tried to respond by bringing the GOP down, pointing out that the military hawkish, pro-death penalty party is inconsistent in its pro-life ethics.

Staff editorial: BOE needs to grow up

We thought AU would at least get through SG election week before the tools would start coming out of their boxes. But alas, we were wrong. The Board of Elections is currently punishing presidential candidate Ashley Mushnick for a music video she produced and circulated as part of her campaign.

Staff editorial: Support EcoSense in vote

If you were on the Quad in the last few days, chances are you've seen a girl dressed as a windmill. The students from EcoSense are pushing a ballot initiative that would require AU to get 50 percent of its energy from clean sources by 2012. And they don't mean "clean coal.

AU needs to support its student athletes

I have a couple bones to pick with the three main "A's" of AU: the administration, AUTO, and the athletic department. I am a coach, a member, and an officer of the Club Gymnastics team here on campus. Many of you may not even know we have a team, for we have only been around for about three years.

Corrections

The Eagle misspelled the name of the candidate we endorsed for comptroller. The correct spelling of his name is DAVID TESLICKO. Since he is a write-in, it is crucial his name be spelled right. The Eagle apologizes for this error.

Secretary and comptroller candidates

Joe Colarusso Class of 2008 Senator Sophomore, CAS and SPA Mastic, N.Y. In brief: Clubs need more money and a larger presence on campus. Students need a voice on the board of trustees, students need to understand what the SG is and the SG needs to understand what the students want.

Presidential and vice presidential candidates

Rob Boisseau Class of 2006 Undergraduate Senator Junior, SPA and CAS Annapolis, Md. In brief: Too often, candidates will disregard their responsibility to offer real information about their campaigns, instead posturing and offering pretty words about their qualifications that run short beyond the first.

Students should pay close attention to SG candidates

Let's look at a few numbers. $849,954. 5,782. 42. 3. In that order, these numbers are the approximate amount of money AU undergrads pay yearly through the UG Activity Fee included in their bills, the approximate number of AU undergrads, the approximate number of AU undergrads who showed up to a Town Hall meeting on Tuesday night to watch the three (yes, that's the last number) candidates up for SG President this year.

Staff editorial: Our choices for the SG

Every year, The Eagle interviews all candidates for Student Government executive offices and endorses one candidate for each position. The Editorial Board considers the candidates' plans for the coming year, including improvements and changes to improve student life.

Don't politicize Iraq casualties

Last Tuesday night, members of the Community Action and Social Justice Coalition and the Movement for Global Justice, two AU student-run groups, met outside the Kay Spiritual Life Center. Armed with cans of spray chalk and cardboard cutouts of human bodies, they outlined the figures in red "to make the campus look like a war zone," according to an e-mail from MGJ to its listserv that I obtained.

Staff editorial: The SAT has its faults

Who doesn't hate the SAT? While it may seem like years have passed since you had to get up early on a Saturday, and take a test to boot, the SAT is now in the hotseat. After acknowledging errors, 4,000 students were found to have been affected. Even more interesting is the fact that 100 of the 4,000 students had applied to AU.

Dems: Flee from this culture of cowardice

The national Democratic Party has been timid in recent years. The Party's loss of command over the House, Senate, and White House in a period of ten years (from 1994 to today) has left it shell-shocked and risk-averse. A Party that once dominated the national debate on every issue, including national security, is now a shadow of its former self.

Staff editorial: No safety in seeking help

When Jordan Knotts checked himself into George Washington University Hospital in the fall of 2004, he thought he was doing himself a service. He was suffering from severe depression and was contemplating suicide. Once GW's administration caught wind of the visit, however, he was suspended and barred from campus, since he was labeled a danger to students.

The mourning process of war

Imagine intense heat.the smell of charring human flesh and fire coming toward you like a plume, swallowing your body whole in its wake. Imagine the ubiquitous sounds of screaming, and the palpable reality of experiencing your own inevitable death. You having to make a split-second decision of whether to stay and be cremated or to jump and fall to your death in a futile effort to escape.
