Staff editorial: High rankings for SIS are great, but no surprise

A recent survey published in Foreign Policy magazine ranked the School of International Service degree programs as some of the best in the nation. The undergraduate degree program tied for 10th with local rival George Washington University. The master's program earned eighth place and the Ph.

Staff editorial: Returning from spring break is basically terrible

We're students too, and we couldn't resist paying homage to all you out there who are just as disillusioned with returning to school after spring break as we are. For your consideration, here are 10 awful things we're grappling with right now. 1. Late-semester midterms.

Staff editorial: Survey details credit transfer woes of some students

A recent informal Eagle poll of AU Abroad alumni found that 15 percent had trouble transferring their credits and another 15 percent felt misled by the AU Abroad office. Many students complained about outdated course information or finding out when they returned from abroad that courses they took abroad do not count for the major or minor requirements that the students thought they did.

Letter to the editor

It seems very surprising that there were no reports on the fan turnout for the Holy Cross game last Sunday. A busload of students, pep band members and cheerleaders spent 16 hours on a bus to watch their Eagles play with heart and pride. This is what college basketball is all about, and it is odd The Eagle did not feel that it was important to show that some students wanted to make Holy Cross OUR court, and we did just that! The Holy Cross students were on spring break, which allowed for the AU pep band and cheerleaders (who have been there for every single game) to lead the fans in cheers that helped our Eagles battle with the 'Saders for the entire game.

Staff editorial: Gender-neutral campus housing ... it's about time

The Undergraduate Senate recently passed a resolution to promote trans-gender issues. Most notably, the resolution explores the creation of gender-neutral floors where students can room with those of the opposite sex and use coed communal bathrooms. The idea is still in the planning stages.

Once upon a time, the environment was important, but left mostly to the elites who understood it. Scientists and other well-read professionals concerned themselves with environmental problems and advised governments on the relevant issues. This was known as the era of conservationism.

Progressives: Don't forget your roots

Last weekend, I had an opportunity to attend CPAC, the largest conservative conference in the United States. Featuring high-profile conservative celebrities such as Newt Gingrich, Sean Hannity and Phyllis Schlafly, the conference inspired the attendants to stay true to the authentic conservative values and stand up against the liberal challenges.

Staff editorial; Editorial Board Endorses SG Executive Candidates

President: Joe Vidulich Unlike the endorsements for the other positions, the endorsement for president was not necessarily an easy one to make. Voters are presented with three options: one mostly joke candidate, a write-in candidate who means well but doesn't come close to having enough experience and someone deeply entrenched in the SG.

Primary Politics, Continued

Last week a reader criticized my recent prognostication on the developing presidential race for two supposed errors. My "biggest problem" was overselling Barack Obama; my "greatest mistake" was underselling the Republican field. I suggested that Obama was best positioned to capture his party's nomination because of the appeal of his inspiring message.

Corrections and Clarifications from March 1

In an article titled "SG waives exec credit requirements," it was incorrectly stated that some members of the Undergraduate Senate favored waiving the 45-credit SG executive candidacy limit for freshman David Manzanares so the SG secretary race would not be uncontested.

Death, Be Not Proud

Abortion has been legal in the United States since Roe v. Wade made it so in 1973. However, the way the pro-choice movement paints things, we're always just a step away from back-alley abortions with coat hangers if those Bible-thumping fundamentalists have their way and overturn Roe v.

Staff editorial: Election waivers underscore limited candidate pool

After two separate votes, the Undergraduate Senate decided late Monday night to waive requirements set forth in SG bylaws and allow two students to run for SG executive positions. Freshman Alex Manzanares will be allowed to run for secretary even though he hasn't completed the required 45 credits.

Bureaucracy, false incentives: Why welfare is broken

As a libertarian, I am philosophically opposed to government transfers of wealth. Period. As a concerned citizen, though, I am more comfortable with transfers of wealth that accomplish their aims of increased equality and living standards for the poor than I am with those that don't.

A Little Less Conversation, A Little More Action

Now I know a little bit about how John Kerry might feel. The near victor in 2004, swift-boated and flip-flopped out of the few thousand votes necessary to win the presidency, seemed almost resurgent and among one of the leading contenders for 2008 until "the joke.

Staff editorial: Diversity panel offers constructive approach

In response to controversial recent postings on the Daily Jolt and Facebook, several primarily black fraternities organized a "University Diversity" panel to discuss race relations on campus. Some of the 150 people in attendance came in response to a posting on The Daily Jolt by Jolt editor and Eagle editorial columnist Paul Perry.

Saving Social Security

For over a year now, a theory on how to save Social Security has been bouncing around in my head. The straight-forwardness of my plan is grounded in pragmatism, yet it is strangely absent from most of the dialogue in and outside of the Beltway. I propose to gradually increase the age at which people receive benefits.
