Staff editorial: Special election scandal

In true SG fashion, the details of this week's election problem are murky at best: An anonymous student approached the Board of Elections Nov. 19 to complain that Paul Grever, now vice president-elect, was campaigning illegally. According to the anonymous source, Grever's friends set up a laptop in the lobby of MGC - one of six places where campaigning is prohibited - to persuade students who had not yet voted to choose Grever as VP.

Letter to the editor: Carley column gives Reagan too much credit

It was helpful of Shane Carley to show his true colors in the first paragraph of his piece ("Democrat divisions benefit GOP"), so I didn't need to waste anymore time reading his opinion. Recent commentary by Paul Krugman and Bob Herbert destroys any notion that Reagan was the "greatest president of the 20th century.

Life in the District: The game of text message foreplay

·

It's Friday afternoon and I hear a familiar beep in my purse. I open my phone to a glowing message. "Hey what r u up to?" Sigh. I guess we're doing this again. Ever since phone calls replaced love letters, women only had to worry about one thing: Will he call or won't he? These days, this concern is exacerbated by even more ways for your sweetie to either snare or snub you electronically.

Opinion

Progressive point: Primary schedule unduly influential

Forty-seven isn't as elegant as 50. But some states frankly don't deserve their star on the American flag. Alaska, bastion of corruption, has to go. When a state's entire federal delegation is rocked by scandal, joining the Arab example of wedding oil wealth with nepotism, it's time to auction off the whole territory.

Staff editorial: Keeping tabs on students?

After a week of debate, the offices of Campus Life and Greek Life have postponed enacting a plan that would require students in greek organizations to report their off-campus addresses to the university. But fraternities and sororities should sigh in only temporary relief.

When good men do nothing: Democrat divisions benefit the GOP

Most Republicans look back on the Ronald Reagan era with a considerable amount of nostalgia, and justifiably so, as the man was arguably the greatest president of the 20th century. Republicans usually get most nostalgic for President Reagan when they look at the issues that plague today's Republican party.

Staff editorial: A rally for practice space

AU students and a Kogod professor seeking to play tennis on AU's courts were repeatedly turned away this fall, as the courts were rented out to players from the local Georgetown Day School. While it is perfectly understandable for the university to try to build neighborhood relations and raise funds in the Athletic Department, it is equally important to respect the needs of AU's own faculty and campus community.

Corrections for Nov. 15, 2007

In "A new home for SIS," The Eagle reported the new School of International Service building was designed to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system's highest level - gold. While the SIS building is designed to meet LEED's gold standard, it is not the highest rating.

Letter to the editor: AU Athletics gets little coverage in The Eagle

Over the past two weeks, AU Athletics has been very active and successful. However, the coverage of these events by The Eagle has been sub-par. The school has had the field hockey team, volleyball and cross-country teams win regular season and Patriot League championships with no front-page mention of these events at all.

Letter to the editor: Response to Letts flood letter

This is in response to Joseph Clark's letter to the editor regarding the Letts terrace flood and ill-equipped bathrooms. I can only speak from experience as a female resident living on campus, but every bathroom stall I have encountered in the residence halls has been equipped with a trashcan.

Letter to the editor: Professors should submit textbook lists soon

As the semester is winding to a close, we just wanted to remind you of the importance of getting your textbook adoptions in to the bookstore as quickly as possible. When you get your book lists in on time, the bookstore is able to buy back books from students at higher prices, offer used copies to students at lower prices in future semesters and ensure that students have books in time for the start of classes.

From atoms to Asimov: Other life forms: A humbling possibility

Perhaps one of the hallmarks of an intelligent species is an intense interest in life in other worlds. Despite being somewhat taboo, this is certainly true of human beings. Science seeks to describe our universe, but it is often forced to do so in terms of our specific point of view here on Earth.

Letter to the editor: SG committed to diversity

Reading this Monday's editorial, "SG Diversity Discussion," we could not help but be disheartened. The editorial gave the impression that the Student Government has done nothing to address the issue of diversity. On the contrary, we have started the conversation about how to address this important issue.

Staff editorial: A sad song for AU clubs

According to the University Center and Student Activities, AU administrators abruptly ended On A Sensual Note's Mary Graydon Center Thursday performance because passers-by-turned-audience members disrupted traffic in the building and disturbed meetings upstairs.

Opinion

Progressive point: Time to prioritize mining reforms

Politicians stumping on their resolve to "keep us safe" usually train their rhetoric on a predictable lot. For the right, the danger is manifest in cave-dwelling fanatics in the Middle East. For the left, carbon footprints and melting ice caps pose the existential threat.

Correction for Nov. 12, 2007

In "Jackson encourages world to confront its limitations," professor Patrick Thaddeus Jackson explains the origin of the word "grok," which was incorrectly spelled.

Staff editorial: Safer at this speed

According to D.C. officials, 27 pedestrians have been killed in traffic accidents this year so far, the most since the city began tracking in 2002. While the fatality count may seem high compared to years past, problems with pedestrian safety are all too familiar for AU students accustomed to the dangerous intersections around campus.

Staff editorial: Monitoring greek life

In light of a proposal that requires students in fraternities and sororities to register their off-campus addresses with the Office of Greek Life, The Eagle supports and praises the Interfraternity Council's dissent. According to Associate Dean of Students Sara Waldron, the university does not intend to use the address database to police fraternities and sororities.
