Nike deal will help finances, boost image

In the past, AU's athletes had been outfitted with Adidas shorts, Reebok shoes and Mizuno volleyballs. But soon, every athlete and every team will be united under one symbol: the swoosh. The athletics department signed a two-year deal with Nike through Buffalo, N.

Students to join selected board committees as non-voters

The AU board of trustees announced last week that students could join some of its committees as non-voting members, but not the influential Trusteeship and Compensation committees, which decide who can join the board and how much money executives will make.

Study finds college literacy scores decline

A study released by the Department of Education found only a quarter of college-educated Americans scored high enough on a literacy test to be considered proficient, and while some AU professors say their students are generally intellectually sophisticated, other say students' skills need work.

Put-back gets women past 'Pards

It hasn't been at all pretty for the 2005-06 AU women's basketball team and Saturday was just that, but the Eagles posted a much-needed 75-74 victory over the Lafayette Leopards at Bender Arena. Freshman Sahar Nusseibeh led the Eagles with a career-high 22 points and 11 rebounds, including seven offensive.

RHA and Student Government pass fire alarm resolution

After two years of discussion with the administration, the Residence Hall Association has introduced several new methods to combat the problem of prank fire alarms, including a "neighborhood watch" program. Residents will receive magnets declaring "Warning: Neighborhood Watch.

Chipotle introduces online ordering service

Chipotle, a popular fast food chain among AU students, unveiled a new online order service available in the District that offers customers the chance to order their food online and pick it up at the restaurant. The "Don't Stand in Line" program works like many other online ordering services.

Men's hoops rebounds against Leopards

The AU men's basketball team will take a win any way they can get it, but after a dominating 74-56 performance against Lafayette Saturday, winning big is always more fun. "That was great," junior Brayden Billbe said. "We really needed that." The Eagles (7-13, 3-4 Patriot League) saw various bright spots, including some assertiveness from freshman Brian Gilmore.

1. Haircuts More people need haircuts and that's the honest truth. If you are sporting ANYTHING that even RESEMBLES a rattail or mullet, more power to you, but at this point it's just not a statement of individuality at all. Please ask that girl or guy down the hall with the clippers to chop that stuff off for you and then you can come to the next party.

Auto show reveals new trends

The Washington, D.C. annual auto show, titled "The State of the Auto," featured hundreds of automobiles which were displayed at the Washington Convention Center from Jan. 24 until Jan. 29. The show, which is spread out over 750,000 square feet, features more than 40 domestic and foreign automobile manufacturers displaying over 800 new cars, trucks, mini-vans, hybrids and sport utility vehicles, according to a press release.

AU will hold teleconference on Facebook privacy policy

American University will hold a teleconference with attorneys, professors and administration on Feb. 14 to determine a Facebook privacy policy. Some employers may begin using the Web site for background checks on potential employees, which could mean trouble for students who post information or pictures of themselves they want kept private from employers, The Eagle previously reported.

Hoops notes: Adams pumps up the family

Although AU coach Jeff Jones praised the Eagles for playing hard Wednesday at Navy, they blew a six-point halftime lead against a team they had not lost to since February 1991 by falling to the Midshipmen, 77-68. According Jones, the loss against Navy made Saturday's Lafayette game even more important.

Deerhoof stomps the Black Cat

Not to say that the venerable old Washington landmark took a knee; rather the confused but enthusiastic crowd at D.C.'s premier indie venue was coaxed by a foursome of dancing beauties called Leg & Pants Dans Theatre into an Indian-style campfire romp.

Marriage should be for all

"Marriage is one of the 'basic civil rights of man.'" Times must have been far simpler back in 1967 when Chief Justice Warren so eloquently and simply ended centuries of racial bias and hatred by granting whites and blacks the right to marry. Unfortunately times were not simple.

Staff editorial: College literacy rates

The Department of Education has released a study that shows that only 25 percent of college-educated Americans can read at a proficient level. The study probed how well we read for comprehension of things like books and newspapers as well as maps. No matter how you slice it, only a quarter of college graduates having the ability to read well is appalling.

"Marlene" is your typical graphic novel, except erotic sex scenes have replaced the entire plot. What plot remains deals with a series of murders revolving around a very sexually active woman named Marlene. It's up to super cop Michael Joergenson to find the murderer.
