SG Senate passes bills, fills seat

The Undergraduate Senate passed two bills at its meeting yesterday, one to improve community relations with Aramark employees and one to allocate additional money to the College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Council. School of International Service Senator Rosie Scott sponsored the Aramark employee bill, which gives Aramark employees the option of being featured on a poster as a way to better inform students of who is working for them, Scott said.

We live in a temporal world. Most people's lives revolve around the concept of time. Picking up on that, Hollywood has put out some of the most bizarre and irredeemably stupid films ever. In contrast, there are also films about our concept of time that are thought-provoking, intriguing and exhilarating to watch.

Tenley residents respond Dear Editor, In an editorial from Nov.16, the headline reads, "Tenley Campus residents are AU students, too." My reply to this is, really? I find this rather ironic as students in the Washington Semester Program were denied the privilege of attending a trip to New York City as they were told they were not American University students.

On Nov. 7, Michigan voted in a referendum to ban the use of race as a factor in state university admissions. Racism and sexism are still a fact of life in America. Officials at Michigan universities were denied an opportunity to help correct these evils of the past that continue to the present.

Staff editorial: Faculty Senate proposes alternative to tenure

The Faculty Senate recently passed a proposal that will allow professors to stay at AU after their first five years of teaching without gaining tenure. Faculty under the new system will be called Professors of the Practice. After their first five years of teaching, they will be offered renewable contracts ranging from two to five years.

Experts say drug war policies unsuccessful

The United States' international policies regarding the War on Drugs are hurting the environment and spreading anti-American sentiment throughout Central and South America while doing little to reduce drug use in the U.S., according to a panelist of drug policy experts who spoke at the national Students for Sensible Drug Policy conference Saturday.

Men's basketball falls to Richmond for first loss

Richmond freshman Brian Morris scored 15 points, including two three-pointers in the final four minutes, to lead the Spiders to a 61-50 come-from-behind victory over AU on Friday night in Richmond. The Eagles led by as many as seven points in the second half, but Richmond went on a 12-2 run to take the lead.

Campaign aims to make recycling easier

Facilities Management is looking to improve recycling on campus by launching a pilot recycling program after winter break on the third and sixth floors of Anderson. The program will include changes such as new recycling bins that are brightly colored in order to distinguish what type of recyclable material goes in each.

When fans filling the bleachers of Bender Arena this fall see somebody sporting a red and white Maple Leaf flag at a school called American University, they can only be thinking of one player. She is none other than Elizabeth Maloney, a four-year veteran of the AU volleyball team and native of America's neighbor to the north.

UN necessary to fight terrorism

The United States should not go it alone when it comes to fighting terrorism, said Gillian Sorensen, former assistant secretary-general of the United Nations in a speech in Hughes Hall Monday. Sorensen told AU students that the United States must work closely with the United Nations to find solutions to international problems.

Blue Crew rallies school spirit, grows in numbers

AU Blue Crew, the recently launched student fan group aimed toward a stronger focus on the university's athletic teams, has grown in number and spirit in the past three months, with more than 580 members, as opposed to the previous 25-member Screaming Eagles, according to Vice President for Finance Ryan Spilhaus.

Offense rolls in men's basketball home opener

AU 97, Morgan State 84 Andre Ingram and Garrison Carr each hit five three-pointers and Derrick Mercer dished out 11 assists to lead AU to a 97-84 victory over Morgan State on Tuesday night at Bender Arena. A strong shooting performance by the Eagles, who hit 11 of 18 from three-point range, allowed AU to hold a double-digit lead for most of the game, an encouraging sign for a team that struggled to find consistent offense last season.

Groups, both nationally and at AU, are using awareness campaigns to inform young people about HIV/AIDS prevention as a new study says young people in the United States are at a persistent risk for HIV infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Staff editorial: Blue Crew defies odds

The newly launched Blue Crew, the AU student fan group, has defied the odds to rally school spirit for AU student athletics. The group boasts 580 members, a significant improvement over the 25 members of the Screaming Eagles, the Blue Crew's predecessor. Attendance was high at the basketball game earlier this week, and those in attendance reported a healthy amount of cheering from AU students.
