Volleyball puts streak at 14 with win over Navy

The AU women's volleyball team completed a three-game sweep of the Navy Midshipmen on Friday, recording their 14th straight victory and keeping a steady hold on first place in the Patriot League.

The Eagles had no trouble prevailing in the first two matches, winning 30-18 and 30-8 respectively, and out hitting the Midshipmen by a wide margin. American hit .265 to Navy's .029 in the first match, while they held the Mids to a negative hitting percentage (.-149) in the second match. AU also registered 15 kills in the first match, the most for any single match of the night by either team.

Led by junior Chelsa Brooks, the Eagles pushed through the third match for a close 33-31 win. Brooks totaled seven kills and two blocks with a .400 hitting percentage.

Eleven seemed the magic number of the night, as the Eagles had 11 blocks and forced the Mids to commit 11 errors in the third match alone. Sophomore Rubena Sukaj also led both teams with 11 individual kills through all three matches.

American dominated Navy in all categories for the night, posting 11 blocks, 51 digs and 10 service aces. Navy had eight blocks, 42 digs and one service ace. The Eagles also outhit the Midshipmen by almost 200 points through three matches.

American stays atop the Patriot League with a perfect league record of 12-0 and a 21-6 overall record. Navy falls to 3-9 in league play and 11-17 overall.

The Eagles go into the Patriot League tournament as the top seed, where they will host Army, Bucknell and Lafayette on Nov. 17 and 18. Seeding for the other three teams will be decided over the next week, with the last of the regular season matches being played.

American plays its last two regular season matches this weekend, when it will host Bucknell on Friday at 7 p.m. and Colgate on Saturday at 2 p.m.
