International brief: Winter storm death toll hits 51

The death toll from a winter storm that affected residents from Texas to New England rose to 51 Tuesday, according to the Associated Press. The storm, which had nearly exited off the East Coast by Tuesday, brought high winds, snow, ice and flooding to areas of the country from Oklahoma to Maine.

Derailment leads to metro investigation

The derailment of a Metrorail train earlier this month caused officials at the National Transportation Safety Board to question the system's safety. On Jan. 7, a Green Line train derailed in a tunnel near the Mount Vernon Square Metro station, causing 18 injuries.

MacArthur Fellow joins SOC

After being selected a MacArthur Fellow - a fellowship given out by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation for exceptional creative work in any field, according to the Foundation's Web site - Charles Lewis joined the School of Communication faculty this year as Distinguished Journalist in Residence.

As the new semester begins, many AU students are out of the bookstore to purchase their textbooks from online vendors. These other resources, including Half.com, Amazon.com and IBeatMyBookstore.com offer textbooks for significantly less than the prices offered by the campus store, which is run by Efollett.

Many American University students found alternative means of buying their books this semester instead of purchasing them from the campus bookstore. They said they found better prices for books at various Web sites. Curtis Harris, a sophomore in the School of International Service, said he bought all of his books on Amazon.

How entertaining moviegoers find a film often depends on their level of expectations. People are much less likely to enjoy a movie if they have high hopes for it than if they don't really know anything about it. It's harder to surpass the expectations that way.

AU named No. 8 for Peace Corps alumni AU made No. 8 on the list of the top 25 medium-sized schools that have alumni serving in the Peace Corps, according to a press release from the Peace Corps Press Office. With 41 alumni currently serving, AU moved up three spots in the rankings from last year, according to the press release.

The unseasonably mild winter on the east coast of the United States is yet another reminder that the latest vogue term for worldwide self-annihilation, "global warming," could be closer to fruition than anyone cares to realize. Like the menace of nuclear destruction, the threat of global warming is centered on the basic principle that humanity's blatant disregard for the environment will have dire consequences for civilization.

Teens found voice through '80s hardcore punk

By the late '70s, The Ramones in New York and The Sex Pistols in London helped propel punk into the limelight and the pages of Rolling Stone. A reaction to the failure of rock 'n' roll elitists to connect with disaffected youth - like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin's 15-minute guitar solos amid tired jam sessions-turned-Top 40 EPs - punk was a much needed grounding force for the bloated egos of the era's musicians.

Men's basketball looks to gain PL credibility against Holy Cross

The AU men's basketball team started off the season with dreams of a conference championship, but fell into a month-long slump over winter break. The Eagles lost six of eight games, including their first two Patriot League matchups. However, they have a chance to establish themselves as a contender on Saturday when they will host the PL-leading Holy Cross Crusaders.

Teaser tornado tears through Trailer Park in 2007

Welcome back! In addition to hangovers and a batch of quickly abandoned resolutions, a brand new year brings a completely new mess of trailers to whet the film lover's appetite. There is a pretty good crop of movies coming out in late spring/early summer that have just dropped their trailers, and it looks like we've got a pretty interesting movie season ahead of us.

Broach the subject of testing and almost immediately there's the complaint that our children are already over-tested, that our system seems to prioritize testing over learning. But this misses the point. In grade school, we had a spelling test every week, and I was quizzed on my timetables at least as often.

Women's basketball falls to Army, drop to 2-2 in league

The AU women's basketball team was unable to overcome an 18-point halftime deficit, losing to Army 60-47 in Annapolis, Md., on Tuesday night. The loss dropped the Eagles to 2-2 in the Patriot League and 7-12 on the season. The Eagles started strong, going on a quick 7-0 run to take an early 7-2 advantage.
