University taking steps to improve emergency preparedness

Last week's shooting at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University has led AU and campuses around the nation to review their current emergency evacuation procedures. "It's unfortunate, but it takes an incident such as this for people to hyperfocus on what needs to change," said David Taylor, AU presidential chief of staff.

Despite tough routine, AU Crew loves what they do

Picture waking up at least six days a week at 4 AM in the morning. You arrive at your destination at 5:30 AM and for the next two hours you're required to row. Later in the day you spend another two hours at the gym working on the cardio machines and lifting weights.

SG passes 2008 budget ins special session

The Undergraduate Senate passed the 2008 Student Government budget on April 18. The $558,000 budget, which passed on a vote of 15 yea, 2 nay and one absentention, was distributed between the many executive based departments and class and school councils.

'Elliot' examines three generations of soldiers

Three wars, three generations of Puerto Ricans and the fight for one country that is not theirs: the United States. "Elliot: A Soldier's Fugue" and its up-and-coming Hispanic playwright Quiara Alegria Hudes give a voice to the loyal soldiers who cannot elect the president nor have voice in the congress but still join the US Army Forces with patriotism.


University policy requires that bicycles be parked in designated areas, however some students say there are not enough racks given the warm weather, leading many students to park their bikes elsewhere, which could cause bikes to be stolen more easily.

AU policy requires bike rack use

As the weather in the District improves, more American University students are riding bicycles to school and finding it more difficult to find safe places to store them. As spring arrives, the racks are becoming overcrowded and some students resort to locking their bikes to railings or benches.

Wonder Woman, Buffy debut hot new comics

Many critics dismiss superhero comic books as a genre for males to fulfill their adolescent power fantasies, but the past few weeks have proven that nothing could be further from the truth. Over the last two weeks the success of female superheroes and female comic book creators has shown that there is a place for strong women in the superhero genre, and championing the cause are none other then the first superwoman, Wonder Woman and her spiritual successor Buffy.

Rugby will lose four starters to graduation

With the end of the spring rugby season, the AU Men's rugby team will be losing four players to graduation. Max Kopper, president of the club and starting No. 8, Sven Romberg vice president and starting flanker and Mark Viola starting prop, all forward positions, brought strength, heart, and intensity against every team the Eagles faced.

Coach Jones Named to Silver Anniversary All-American Team Men's basketball head coach Jeff Jones was named to the 2007 National Association of Basketball Coaches Silver Anniversary All-American Team, NABC officials announced. Jones, a starting point guard at the University of Virginia, is second in school history in assists, with 598.

Student government brief: SG elects new speaker

On April 22, the Undergraduate Senate passed a resolution on campus safety and also elected a new Speaker of the Senate. Current Parliamentarian, Caitlin Hodgkins, a sophomore in the School of Public Affairs, was elected the new speaker of the Senate. Hodgkins is also currently the Judicial Board chair, a post she since resigned from after her election.

Comedic leading man Wilson takes stab at horror genre

This past Friday, the suspenseful film "Vacancy" hit theaters. The film, which stars Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale, chronicles the misadventures of a bickering couple on the verge of divorce whose car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and is forced to stay at a shady motel.

AU's Community Development class protested over the last two weeks throughout D.C. to tell the D.C. Board of Education and Mayor Adrian Fenty, D, to repair the poor physical conditions of the city's public schools. The protests occurred as Fenty won final approval from the D.

Staff editorial: Text Message Alerts Should Be Part of Larger Response

In light of the tragedies last week at Virginia Tech, AU officials, like those at most other colleges around the country, have begun reviewing the school's emergency response policies. Students are generally not aware of the current policy even though it's available online and all resident assistants are (at least in theory) well-versed in the procedures.

Theatre seniors present Iizuka's 'Skin'

The Theatre and Music Theatre programs' Class of 2007 displayed their creativity and ambition in its production of Naomi Iizuka's "Skin," a piece that significantly deviates from the traditional dramatic literary canon. The play is a magically realistic piece, centered on a tragic collision of lives in a non-linear storyline.
