Sex education could slow HIV/AIDS

Accurate and comprehensive sexual education could help stop the AIDS epidemic in the black community in the United States and abroad, Women's Initiative HIV/AIDS Task Force Director Melodi Sampson said at a panel discussion Thursday. Women's Initiative held the panel and an open forum in honor of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

The AU community must work now to pass on an even stronger university to future generations, AU President Neil Kerwin said during a speech at his inauguration ceremony Friday in Bender Arena. "[AU] will always command the best that I have to give, and I will ask the same from each of you," he said.

Facebook apps could threaten users' privacy

Facebook unnecessarily grants third-party application developers access to users' information, according to a study conducted by University of Virginia student researcher Adrienne Felt. Felt looked at the social networking site's 150 most popular applications, which allow users to share photos, play games and engage in time-wasting activities.

Officials in northern India conducting medical research will purchase 1,300 gallons of cow urine to study its curative properties, according to the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph. The bovine by-product is an important component of Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine in southern Asia.

House passes collegiate aid legislation

The U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly Thursday to tackle rising tuition costs and increase inaccessibility for low-income students at colleges and universities around the U.S., including at AU, according to a press release from the House Education and Labor Committee.

Stage gets schooled with Disney hit

First aired as a movie in 2006, "High School Musical" soared to popularity unseen by previous Disney Channel Original Movies. Then came the sing-along and dance-along versions so that fans could trip over their preadolescent limbs while learning the moves to "We're All In This Together.

Staff editorial: An accurate survey of service?

While we applaud AU for the creation of Eagle Eyes, a secret-shopper program designed to improve the customer service of the university's dining facilities, students shouldn't charge AU with a task it can't complete. Not to be too scathing, but all of the reimbursed meals and service surveys in the world can't instill AU's student body with a sense of respect, consideration and common sense.

Lack of depth pins down wrestling against Rutgers

The wrestling team Sunday came up short against Rutgers New Jersey, losing 28-13 against their conference rivals. Forfeits were a major factor in the defeat for AU, which was without some of their top wrestlers such as defending national champion Josh Glenn.

Letter to the editor

Peter's Brusoe's column about AU's smoking policy in The Eagle's Feb. 7 edition is devoid of anything that could be considered a valid warrant. Nowhere in his column did he mention anything resembling a sound argument. For example, Brusoe writes, "Many smokers ask the question, 'Is smoking a problem on this campus?' Yes.

AU's CS5 takes up residency in GARC

On one gloomy day in early February, three young men make their way into the back room of Letts Residence Hall's first floor and begin to set up and tune their instruments. Band practice will start with or without all five members today. Corey Schneider, a freshman in the Kogod School of Business, turns from his keyboard and cues for drummer Geoff Malloy, a freshman in the College of Arts and Science, and saxophonist Robert Lutz, a freshman in the School of International Service, to begin.

Campus brief

The 2011 Class Council is trying to get the freshman class more involved on campus by creating groups to assist each of the council's officers, according to 2011 Class Secretary Cait Chew. "We want to get more of the freshman involved in class council and give the freshman class a bigger presence in different events around campus," Chew said.

Men's basketball shines with cameras rolling

The Eagles got a huge lift from an unexpected source Sunday when junior Brian Gilmore came off the bench to score a career-high 26 points to lead the Eagles to an 82-74 win over Lehigh at Bender Arena. The Eagles fell behind early and quickly found themselves in an 11-4 hole as the Mountain Hawks converted on seemingly every possession in the first five minutes of the game.

'Kumar' star promotes Obama campaign at AU

Democratic presidential candidate and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama's candidacy has attracted a large youth following that helped him win the Iowa caucuses and other contests, actor Kal Penn said during an event Friday night at the Washington College of Law. Penn, known for his roles in the film "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle" and the television show "House," encouraged young people to vote during the event.

Yahoo rejects Microsoft's offer Yahoo plans to reject Microsoft's bid to purchase the company for $44.6 billion. The New York Times reported Microsoft is likely to make more offers, seeing Yahoo as a way to compete against Google for online software. People familiar with Microsoft's plans also told The New York Times that Microsoft is planning to court Yahoo's largest shareholders, hoping it will persuade the leadership board at Yahoo.
