Women's basketball soars over buckled-down Bison

The women's basketball team broke a record last night in Lewisburg, Pa., when they beat the Bucknell Bison 50-46 to mark their fifth straight win of the season, a first-ever occurrence for the Eagles since joining the Patriot League.

Guards Liz Hayes and Pam Stanfield racked in the points for their team as AU started the game off strong, entering the first half with an 11-3 run.

The Eagles continued to hold on to their lead for the half. Junior forward Sahar Nusseibeh assisted her team with two lay-ups with 8:55 on the clock. The Bison attempted to respond to the Eagle baskets but could not come within more than four points of the lead.

As the clock dwindled down to the half-time buzzer, Hayes shook the net, scoring the final basket of the half and bringing the score to 25-19.

The Bison re-entered the court with more vigor, going on a 6-0 run to bring the score to a 25-25 deadlock. However, it wouldn't be long before the Eagles took control once again.

Hayes led her team on a scoring streak, making her third three-point shot of the night that would result in a 35-28 Eagle lead.

The Bison were relentless, attempting to tie the score once again. It was unsuccessful, however, as the Eagles continued to find a way to hold on with a freshman forward Liz Leer shot to put the score to 48-43.

With 30 seconds left on the clock and 50-46 on the scoreboard, it was anyone's game. Bison Lauren Schober powered a shot of desperation but was unable to connect, allowing the Eagles to escape with a 50-46 win, the first time in the last six Eagle-Bison match-ups.

The Eagles are now 6-3. They will look to keep their winning streak going when they host Colgate Saturday at noon.
