Students strut at Queers and Allies show

Members of Queers and Allies donned boas, bras and baseball hats in their annual drag show last night in the Tavern. Queers and Allies held the show in conjunction with ATV, Eagle Nights and DC Kings as part of Founders' Week. Audience members could just watch from their seats, but many chose to participate.

GW to install AEDs on campus

George Washington University will attempt to ensure immediate care for victims of sudden cardiac arrest by installing 135 additional automatic external defibrillators in highly populated buildings on its Foggy Bottom, Mount Vernon and Virginia campuses. An AED is a device approximately the size of a laptop computer that analyzes abnormalities in a person's heart rhythm through two attached electrodes placed on the chest.

Women's basketball soars over buckled-down Bison

The women's basketball team broke a record last night in Lewisburg, Pa., when they beat the Bucknell Bison 50-46 to mark their fifth straight win of the season, a first-ever occurrence for the Eagles since joining the Patriot League. Guards Liz Hayes and Pam Stanfield racked in the points for their team as AU started the game off strong, entering the first half with an 11-3 run.

The Undergraduate Senate passed a bill to allow students to use Blackboard to monitor their EagleBuck$ accounts and discussed extending hours at the Student Health Center at its meeting Sunday. The Electronic Access Guarantee to Legitimate Expenses Act asks Housing and Dining Programs to upgrade the Blackboard system to allow students to monitor their EagleBuck$ expenses, said Jason Cunningham, the class of 2009 senator who wrote and presented the bill.

AU ball celebrates Kerwin, founding

Student Government President Joe Vidulich toasted AU President Neil Kerwin and the university's 115th anniversary at the combined Inauguration Celebration and Founders' Day Ball Friday at the Italian Embassy. Approximately 1,250 people attended the sold-out event on the embassy's first floor.

Smithsonian recognizes hip-hop history

If the Smithsonian is the cultural authority it generally is regarded to be, MF Doom's iconic metal mask will one day be displayed next to Lincoln's hat and Kermit the Frog in the American Treasures section of the National Museum of American History. Until then, hip-hop fans will have to be satisfied with the exhibition "RECOGNIZE! Hip-Hop and Contemporary Portraiture" at the National Portrait Gallery.

Vampire Weekend brings the prep, funk

Vampire Weekend, dubbed "prep rock" by the music industry because of their Ivy League origins, took the stage Wednesday night at the Rock and Roll Hotel donning oxford shirts and cardigans. The preppiest music lovers in the place had to be the band itself, as the audience on the whole was less madras plaid, more camp plaid, as far as stylistic classifications go.

Lear leads women's basketball to road victory over Lehigh

Freshman Liz Lear's career-high 16 points helped lead the women's basketball team to its fourth straight victory on the road Saturday, defeating the Lehigh Mountain Hawks 62-49. Lear's eight consecutive points in the opening minutes, combined with back-to-back three-pointers by fellow freshman Michelle Kirk and senior Talicia Jackson, gave AU a commanding 22-5 lead throughout the game's first 10 minutes.

Sex education could slow HIV/AIDS

Accurate and comprehensive sexual education could help stop the AIDS epidemic in the black community in the United States and abroad, Women's Initiative HIV/AIDS Task Force Director Melodi Sampson said at a panel discussion Thursday. Women's Initiative held the panel and an open forum in honor of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

The AU community must work now to pass on an even stronger university to future generations, AU President Neil Kerwin said during a speech at his inauguration ceremony Friday in Bender Arena. Facebook apps could threaten users' privacy

Facebook unnecessarily grants third-party application developers access to users' information, according to a study conducted by University of Virginia student researcher Adrienne Felt. Felt looked at the social networking site's 150 most popular applications, which allow users to share photos, play games and engage in time-wasting activities.

Officials in northern India conducting medical research will purchase 1,300 gallons of cow urine to study its curative properties, according to the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph. The bovine by-product is an important component of Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine in southern Asia.

House passes collegiate aid legislation

The U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly Thursday to tackle rising tuition costs and increase inaccessibility for low-income students at colleges and universities around the U.S., including at AU, according to a press release from the House Education and Labor Committee.
