Film festival celebrates fifth year

The D.C. Shorts Film Festival, which MovieMaker Magazine recently called "one of the nation's leading short film festivals," has become a premier venue for local and national filmmakers alike. The festival, which is into its fifth year, showcases a broad scope of genres, from animation and experimental work to documentaries and musical trailers.

MGC bridge nearly complete

The new pedestrian bridge between the main quad, Mary Graydon Center and Butler Pavilion will open this weekend after unstable soil found over the summer forced delays in its construction, according to University Architect Jerry Gager. "We found some unsuitable soil, so we had to change some engineering aspects of the structure," he said.

Former Kogod School of Business Dean Sterling Ivison Jr., 89, died Aug. 16 from Alzheimer's disease. Ivison, who taught finance, earned an Outstanding Teaching Award from AU in 1978. He became Kogod's acting dean in 1981 and held that position until 1983, according to a memo Dean of Academic Affairs Haig Mardirosian sent to the campus community on Thursday.

The AU men's soccer team split its second consecutive tournament over the weekend, as they defeated N.C. State University 3-0 on Friday afternoon and lost to Duke University by the same score Sunday. Public Safety changes policy

With the last academic year passing relatively crime free, many students have been startled to find reports of sexual assault and robbery upon their return. Surprisingly, there has been no increase in crime-according to Public Safety Chief McNair; his department has simply become more diligent about alerting the campus community of safety concerns.

Golem upstages Walkmen

The lights at the 9:30 club faded to a pulsating purple hue Sunday as the members of klezmer band Golem filled the venue with a cacophony of accordion, tambourine and trumpet. Those fortunate and timely enough to arrive at the venue to catch this New York-based group's opening act were greeted by a warped spiritual prayer to the gods that only those touched by this peculiar sound could comprehend.

Junior forward Kelsey Brasher scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season to help the Eagles fight to a 1-1 tie on the road with the University of Maryland Terrapins on Friday. AU scored the first goal of the game as Brasher put the ball into the back of the net in the second minute of play, taking a pass from junior defender Erin Stebbins to put the Eagles up 1-0.

Still, this year these problems seem to leave even the most enthusiastic student exasperated as textbook sales continue to increase. Apatow builds college vocabulary

They're pretty sure you already do, but Judd Apatow's latest batch of fearless "bromantic" comedies want you to know that they're kind of a big deal. If you've attended any institution of higher learning in the past three or four years, it only takes a brief minute to realize that the phrases and characteristics popularized, and sometimes invented, by the Apatow gang in films such as "Pineapple Express," "Anchorman," "Knocked Up" and "Superbad" spread faster than Ron Burgundy's ego.

When I walked through AU's gates three years ago, my new and unfamiliar home was sliding into chaos. Within weeks, I saw President Ben Ladner plummet amid allegations that involved French chefs and private chauffeurs. Students protested on the quad and demanded accountability, honesty and real leadership.
