No. 15 ranked field hockey win openers

The AU Eagles triumphed twice this weekend in the American Field Hockey Invitational. The 15th nationally ranked Eagles surged in the second half to topple the University of New Hampshire Wildcats 4-0 on Saturday and then clawed their way to a 2-0 win on Sunday against the 19th ranked University of Albany Great Danes.

Chancellor reforms D.C. public schools

AU students and faculty are getting more involved in the debate over whether District of Columbia Public Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee's shakeup of procedures and personnel in the D.C. public school system is doing more harm or good. The system is currently failing, said David Teslicko, a senior in the School of International Service.

Public Safety teams with police

AU will continue to monitor students' off-campus behavior as the university increases its contact with local police departments, according to Public Safety Chief Michael McNair. The AU Student Conduct Code allows the university and local police to prosecute students for illegal activities that occur off campus.

Transgender care lacking

In 2006, staff members of AU issued a proposal calling for the coverage of transgender care by the university's health care program. The proposal has yet to produce results and staff insurance still does not cover transgender care. Neither does the student health insurance.

Growing up means leaving home life behind

My grandfather taught me my first French words. Over homemade oatmeal in his old house, he spoke all the French he remembered from his childhood in Quebec. "Fermez-la bouche," or "close your mouth," he said with a rasping chuckle. He was a glowing retiree then, easing into his eighties with the well-dressed charm of a man coming into his own.

As a conservative, I was particularly disappointed with Michael Cartier's assessment of the Georgian conflict. The invasion of Russian troops into Georgian territory was not any sort of "retaliation." For nearly 20 years, Russia has attempted to destabilize any former Soviet republic that has broken away towards democracy.

Women's volleyball beat GWU, GMU, Georgetown for title

The AU women's volleyball team beat George Mason University 3-1 on Saturday, en route to winning the third annual D.C. Volleyball Challenge at George Washington University. In a tightly contested match, AU defeated a pesky George Mason team 25-21, 20-25, 25-23 and 25-15.
