Voices and violins make music at AU

The AU Chorus and Symphony Orchestra will perform together at the Greenberg Theater Saturday. "This is the first performance that has incorporated such a meshing of both the orchestra and chorus," said Gene Fielden, a sophomore who has played the viola in the orchestra since his freshman year.

Edwin McCain on life, music and Birchmere

Best known for his tear-jerking rock ballads, like "I'll Be," the soulful hometown American sound of Edwin McCain came partially from exposure to Motown and punk rock during his youth. In an interview with The Eagle, McCain shared his thoughts about the Birchmere Music Hall, where he will be performing this weekend promoting his most recent album, "The Austin Sessions."

Hip-hop masters face off

Two of rap's biggest names moved up the release of their albums to Nov. 14 because of bootlegging Internet piracy. Jay-Z moved the release of "The Black Album" from Nov. 28 to Nov. 14. Following Jay-Z's decision, G-Unit - prot?g?s of 50 Cent - announced that it would release its debut album, "Beg For Mercy," originally slated for release on Nov.

Rodriguez and Draughn look to lead B-ball this year

The road's been neither straight nor easy for senior basketball players Andres Rodriguez and Jernavis Draughn. Both members of the twosome have graced other programs than the Eagles during their four years of eligibility. And despite senior status, their first year playing together was last season.

Park Bethesda neighbors are happier with college residents

Park Bethesda is a University-owned apartment building available to upperclassmen. AU acquired the building last August. Originally, there was neighborhood opposition to AU's acquisition of the building, according to Julie Weber, executive director of Housing and Dining Programs. However, she said neighbors' concerns have dwindled over time.

The man, the myth, the Goldberg

Volleyball coach Barry Goldberg has been combining compassion with coaching at AU since he took the reins of the program in 1989. In his 14 seasons, he has taken a tiny program without uniforms for its players and turned it into one of the most successful in the region, amassing a 370-149 record and four NCAA Tournament berths.

20 Athletic scholarships cut next year

The AU Athletics Department cut all Swimming and Diving scholarships last week, a move that will reallocate funds to other athletic projects. The policy goes into effect for the 2004-05 season, which means no incoming freshman will be awarded athletic scholarships for the Men's or Women's Swimming and Diving teams.

Town Hall Meeting addresses sexual attacks

Several changes and improvements are in the works to make AU's campus safer and better lit, according to student government and administration officials at a town hall meeting Tuesday night. The meeting was held in response to the five unwanted sexual attacks that female students have experienced so far this semester, three of them occurring late last Wednesday and early last Thursday.

GA approves budget unanimously

The General Assembly approved the 2004-05 Student Confederation Budget, with amendments, by an unanimous vote Friday after less than two hours of deliberation. The budget proposed cuts in most SC programming except the Kennedy Political Union, Student Union Board and Eagle Nights.

TDR to survey campus

The best way to evaluate how students feel about campus eateries may not be through Today@AU, but rather by setting up computers in TDR, the Joint Committee on Dining Services discussed Nov. 3. The survey examines all dining venues on campus such as the Terrace Dining Room, the Tavern, The Eagle's Nest, Einstein Bros.' Bagels, Jamba Juice, Chik-Fil-A and Salsa.
