Chilean Nobel Prize winner celebrated

It wasn't a typical birthday party. At the end of Pablo Neruda's centennial tribute Wednesday night, many who attended the event were lost in thought instead of rejoicing in song. There was standing room only in Kay Spiritual Life Center as students, faculty, award-winning authors and others listened to a recorded recitation from the Chilean poet.

Baseball in D.C.'s home stretch

Nearly 33 years to the day since the Washington Senators left D.C. and became the Texas Rangers, Mayor Anthony Williams officially welcomed Major League Baseball back to the District, hoping that it will rejuvenate fans and the Anacostia region, where the new stadium will be built.

Garc¡a Bernal moves from 'Y Tu Mama' to 'Motorcycle'

Gael Garc¡a Bernal, a Mexican actor who caught the eye of audiences with his performances in "Y Tu Mam  Tambi?n" and "Amores Perros," recently took on the awesome task of becoming a 23-year-old version of political leader Guevara in Walter Salles' "The Motorcycle Diaries."

American Indian exhibits disappoint

If there is one word that can be used to describe the new American Indian Museum it is incomplete. While excited crowds and a nearby festival mark the exterior of the building, the interior of the building does not live up to expectations.

Terror from outside in at Spy Museum

The International Spy Museum added a spectacular new exhibit and, once again, raised the bar on what a museum experience should be. "The Enemy Within," a 45-minute, self-guided audio tour, explores the history of terrorism within the borders of the United States.

AU shoots down colonials, 1-0

On Tuesday, the AU Women's Soccer team continued its best season start in history, dropping host George Washington, 1-0, on a late first-half goal from senior forward Marcela Ricupero. The Eagles (8-1-1 overall) haven't lost since their second match of the season on Sept. 4, going 7-0-1 in that stretch.

Students anticipate presidential debate

Thursday night President George W. Bush will face off against Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) in Miami for the first of three presidential debates. Citizens across the country and across party lines will be tuning in, as will some AU students who are having "debate parties," though others plan to ignore the event.

Jefferson's coin gets a makeover in 2005

The nickel's design will be changed to commemorate the bicentennial of 19th century explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark's journey into the American West. U.S. Mint spokesman Michael White said the nickel design comes after legislation Congress passed last year.

"Going Upriver" with Kerry

In this allegedly very important election year, there's a lot of so-called entertainment being released with underlying meanings. Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" led the pack of anti-Bush films that includes "Outfoxed" and "Silver City," as well as a number of lesser known quasi-documentaries shown in indie theaters and released on DVD for sale on the Internet.

Delta Gamma raises money for blind people

AU's chapter of the Delta Gamma sorority will hold "Anchor Clanker" day on the Quad on Saturday to raise money for Service for Sight, a program for the blind and visually impaired. The sorority has held Anchor Clanker day annually for about 10 years, according to Delta Gamma President Elizabeth Claps.
