U.N. appoints WCL prof to human rights position

Washington College of Law professor Robert Goldman was appointed in July to be an independent expert for the United Nations on the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism, according to the Associated Press.

New birth control suppresses periods

Television ads began running in June for a birth control pill that makes women menstruate only four times a year, versus the 13 periods women have when on traditional birth control, according to The Washington Post.

Former AU athlete killed, 'of interest' in murder cases

Jarion Childs, a standout defensive star and leader for the AU men's basketball team from 1997-2000, was shot and killed in his hometown of Groton, Conn. after breaking into a Dairy Queen shortly after midnight on June 28. His death has been ruled a homicide, according to WFSB, a news channel in Connecticut. Since then, Childs has also been named a "person of interest" involved in murder.

Eating and reading cheaply in D.C.

Washington, D.C. is not a cheap city. Compared to smaller cities and towns, the overall cost of living can be intimidating. However, there are ways of getting around these expenses. Rather than frequenting restaurants in trendy sections of the city or shopping for groceries at the Eagle's Nest, look for less crowded places to dine and scout out local stores that offer cheap bargains.

Recent grad produces and directs

Kristen Cornwall, who graduated this May with a degree in theater, began the summer intending to direct a show. She planned on eventually going to graduate school for directing, then starting her own theater company some time five years down the line. But a twist of fate and some disappointing producers changed her plans.

AU asst. coach runs in 1,500 m Olympic semifinals

Sean O'Brien, an AU assistant track coach and former AU track athlete, placed No. 21 of 24 competitors in the 1,500-meter run semifinals at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Sacramento, Calif. on Friday, July 16, according to the USA Track & Field Web site, www.usatf.org.

I'm sorry. Am I the only one who sees what a truly disastrous Olympic games this has been for the United States of America? In the past two weeks, our country could've gone to war, changed the Constitution or raised gas prices higher...and that still would've been better than what actually happened in Athens.

Gurnee replaces Woods as Catholic chaplain

The Rev. William Gurnee will greet the AU community this fall as he takes the place of Roman Catholic Chaplain Keith Woods in the Kay Spiritual Life Center. Gurnee said he was "thrilled" when he found out that Cardinal McCarrick, the archbishop of D.C., had assigned him to AU.
