Campus Brief: Several GA members resign due to commitments

Several members resigned at the General Assembly meeting Sunday due to study abroad commitments and strenuous course loads next semester. Speaker Richard Bradbury said that there is "nothing unusual" about this type of turnover between semesters. He said this is an opportunity for people to become involved in the GA by filling the 13 vacancies.

Students visit National Christmas Tree

December 9

President George W. Bush lighted the National Christmas tree Dec. 2 on the Ellipse, officially beginning D.C.'s holiday season. The tree will light up from dusk to 11 p.m. until Dec. 23. Musical groups from around the country will perform at the tree every night as part of the Christmas Pageant of Peace.

Pixies re-form after a decade of dormancy

It was arguably the most anticlimactic breakup in the history of rock 'n' roll: death by fax machine. The Pixies were fresh off their thankless opening slot for U2's "Zoo TV." On New Year's Eve 1992, Frank Black faxed the band's management with alert of the breakup. Days later, he announced the split live on BBC Radio 5. But in their posthumous years, the Pixies sold more records and gained more fans. And for that reason, a reunion was unlikely (given the band's tension) but inevitable.

Hillel, the center of Jewish life at AU, has numerous programs planned to celebrate Hanukkah, said Amy Levine, AU Hillel director. Hanukkah, which is celebrated for eight days and nights, honors the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The word Hanukkah means "dedication.
