MPD to monitor party complaints in Georgetown

With help from the Metropolitan Police Department, Georgetown University aims to get its "party problem" under control, said members of the Georgetown University Student Association. Two off-duty, uniformed police officers will patrol the Georgetown neighborhoods of Burleith and in West Georgetown and respond to neighbors' calls to the Student Neighbor Assistance Program hotline beginning in early February, according to Georgetown 's student newspaper, The Hoya.

Studio Theatre's new venue needs hot talent

In the shell of a building, mediocrity hatched. The production of Mark Jackson's "Death of Meyerhold" opened The Studio Theatre's new experimental venue - a hollowed-out, industrial-feeling attic in its theater complex. The Theatre calls it Stage Four, a "flexible, raw theatre space.

Pell Grants may increase

College students currently receiving Pell Grants from the government might soon be seeing an increase in their financial aid, President George W. Bush announced Jan. 14. At a speech in Jacksonville, Fla., Bush said he intends to increase the maximum award of the Department of Education's Pell Grants by $500.

Thirty-seven AU alumni volunteered in 2004 to join the Peace Corps, ranking the school as having the 13th most volunteers among medium-sized universities. AU's ranking has risen steadily in this list over the last several years. Significantly, AU is among the smallest of the group of schools categorized as medium-sized, with an undergraduate enrollment of just over 5,000.

Campus Briefs: Greeks' party to fundraise for tsunami

Three AU students will host a party to benefit the victims of last month's tsunami. The "Do Your Part" Party, created by Robyn Wilkov, Jaclyn Mason and Simon Guindi, will take place on Feb. 3 at the Home nightclub on F Street. "As a college student, I desired to make a significant contribution to the relief efforts," Wilkov said.

AU students join protesters, some face pepper spray

January 24

More than 100 AU students protested on Inauguration Day, several of whom were affected by pepper spray that D.C. police used to control crowds around Pennsylvania Avenue and 14th Street during the parade. A group of protesters tried to remove security fences and a handful got through, according to Reuters. Some activists wore gas masks and threw rocks, snow and water bottles at the officers. About a dozen people were affected by the pepper spray and vomited and shouted, while some others covered their noses with scarves and sleeves and tried to get into the Willard Hotel, The Eagle witnessed.

Senior brings laundry service to University

A D.C. laundry business began service at AU this semester and may soon accept EagleBuck$, according to part-owner Evan Geronemus, a senior in the Kogod School of Business. The business, Soapy Joe's, picks up laundry in the lobby of all AU residence halls, including Park Bethesda and on Tenley Campus, as well as at the Berkshire Apartments.

A runner-up of NBC's reality television show "The Apprentice" told students how to succeed in life and business when he spoke at the University Club Wednesday. "I feel presidential tonight," said Kwame Jackson, who was one person away from working for Donald Trump in the first season of the show. In his speech, Jackson talked about his pathway from earning his Harvard MBA to landing on a reality show.

Bush speech dubbed 'historic'

George Walker Bush was sworn in Thursday afternoon for his second term as the 43rd president of the United States, giving a speech that an AU professor has called "historic" in its foreign policy focus. The 55th presidential inauguration, organized by the Presidential Inauguration Committee, followed the traditional schedule, with Bush sworn in after Vice President Dick Cheney.
