Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor: The ban on smoking the D.C. Council is considering seeks to prohibit smoking in private businesses, namely bars and nightclubs. While the government has a right to ban smoking in its own facilities, imposing restrictions on privately owned buildings is overstepping authority.

Sick of Red Sox after 'Fever Pitch'

The night the Boston Red Sox won the World Series was one of those moments that Sox fans will always remember. The guys you followed through thick and a lot of thin running onto the field in triumph, players hugging each other, pandemonium, and Jimmy Fallon and Drew Berrymore dancing.

Legal immigration helps

Sometimes, all of life comes together. I wrote a paper on illegal immigration, I had been planning to write a column about it, and when I opened up Monday's Eagle, I saw that Seth Johnson had given me a perfect jumping-off point. Illegal immigration is a problem - on this, I think, Johnson and I agree.

Opinion: Pura Vida campaign more than 'surface activism'

I am writing because an editorial that appeared March 21 contained grave mischaracterizations. First, The Eagle characterized the Harvard living-wage campaign as a victory won "without having to take any drastic measures." This is simply not the case. The Harvard campaign was one of the most drastic measures taken by students this decade.

Serious students saved swim teams

If anyone can relate to the potential elimination of three AU teams after the spring of 2006, it's the swimmers of Dartmouth College. Administrators at the Ivy League school announced the elimination the men's and women's teams two years ago as part of a two-year, $10.

Staff Editorial: Keep yourself safe

The theft of three laptops and iPods from McDowell Hall on Tuesday was the third such incident on campus in the last few weeks. Similar incidents of burglary have been reported in Hughes and Anderson halls. While it is a shame that this had to happen to any student, every student should know that he is responsible for his own belongings.

Steve Forbes, editor of Forbes business magazine, praised President Bush's plan to privatize Social Security in a speech at Tenley Campus, using a baseball analogy perfect for the Nationals' opening day on Monday. Gas prices expected to rise this summer

The recent rise in temperature also signifies a predicted increase in gasoline prices this May, due to seasonal effects, rising oil prices and a higher demand for gas. According to Jacob Bournazian, an economist for the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration, gas prices have traditionally peaked in the springtime during the last three driving seasons.

Opinion: 'Fair trade' not as simple as it sounds

Somehow the Residence Hall Association managed to voted 12-1 against bringing Starbucks to campus without accurately taking all coffee industry issues into consideration. We are skeptical about why the RHA is assuming that Pura Vida is any more responsible than Starbucks.

The Dresden Dolls bring Tavern to life

Ah, The Tavern. What can the bands that play here possibly think when they step into the fluorescent lights and whirring blenders of the beloved eatery. It seems like a place where good music would be impossible to hear and where quality would have to be checked at the door, as the idea of hearing great music opposite a Chick-fil-A and next to a Jamba Juice is a little weird.
