Pope remembered by university

Pope John Paul II, who led the Catholic Church for 26 years, died Saturday morning after a long battle with Parkinson's disease and weeks after undergoing a tracheotomy to aid his breathing. The pope's heart failed on Thursday, and his kidneys and circulation began to fail, which caused his condition to worsen.

Former vice presidential candidate John Edwards will speak April 10 at 8:00 p.m. in Bender Arena, after $15,000 was appropriated to pay for the event by the General Assembly, the legislative branch of the Student Confederation. The assembly approved the Kennedy Political Union's request for the funds on Sunday.

Last weekend's matches at Reeves Field showcased two sides of the Women's Lacrosse team: the one that's assertive only late in the game, and the one that can put a team under pressure for all 60 minutes. The latter side showed up Sunday for the Eagles (5-6, 3-0 Patriot League), who led LaSalle (5-5) in the opening minutes before striking hard in the second half as they broke a two-match losing streak with a 17-13 victory.

The AU Men's Tennis team kept rolling this weekend, dominating in a critical Patriot League clash Sunday at Navy, 6-1, after dismissing St. Bonaventure by the same score in a home tilt on Friday. The pair of victories puts AU at 10-3 overall and 2-0 in a still-young PL season.

Local Fraternrity Raises Money with Dodgeball Event

Local Fraternity Raises Money through Dodgeball Event WASHINGTON DC- Delta Tau Delta hosted the First Annual Delt Dodgeball Tournament on Saturday, April 2nd , in Bender Arena. The tournament raised over $1300 and all proceeds will be donated to the Adam Friedman Fund for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Starbucks defends free-trade position

The Residence Hall Association voted 12-1 Sunday night to endorse the Pura Vida coffee company over Starbucks in the ongoing debate over ownership of a future on-campus coffee shop in the Mary Graydon Center. After hearing from students representing the two companies, the RHA voted to determine which company it would endorse when it meets with Housing and Dining this afternoon.

College students are not typically obsessive Ashlee Simpson fans. They don't go to her concerts because they think she has a good voice but because they want to dance to some pop tunes and have fun with friends. They do own her CD, though. Don't tell. At the Ashlee Simpson show held at Constitutional Hall Tuesday, the expectation was to find a bunch of 'tweens accompanied by their parents, clutching "I Love Ashlee Simpson" posters in their hands.

Micheal Prather was chosen as the first-ever Mr. American Friday night after a two-hour competition that included categories of opening dance, swimwear, talent, impromptu questioning and an interview. Prather, Mr. Hughes Hall, competed against nine other contestants who each represented a class, hall or fraternity.

12-year-old thinks new Weezer song is 'OK' Middle school student Tiffani McRitardde heard the new Weezer single, "Beverly Hills," on the radio yesterday and decided that she thinks the song is okay. "I thought that once Smash Mouth and Everclear sort of disappeared, there would be no one to fill the void of totally awesome and rockin' jams," McRitardde said.

Campus Brief: AU student wins Truman scholar

American University's third Truman Scholar in five years, Forrest Dunbar, won the highest honor for a U.S. student seeking a career in public service, as well as the prestigious scholarship's $30,000 prize. About 15 percent of more than 1,000 juniors who apply win the scholarship each year.
